ARTIST STATEMENT
I love drawing. I love lines. I love color and Chiaroscuro. I love monsters and sadness and dancing. I love big and little cracks and dirt and whispered secrets. I love what a brushstroke feels like.
BIO
Born in Georgia in 1970. Grew up in North Georgia, West Alabama and Central Mississippi. Both my parents were teachers. Father taught piano composition and choral music. Mother taught English - American Literature. I taught my first Art lessons in Kindergarten in Dahlonega, GA - "How to draw a horse head."
I have been drawing since I can remember. Like so many things, my brother got me started. Drawing has always been at the core of who I am. Pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, colored pencil. Started painting in junior high - acrylic and watercolor and airbrush. Made Art in junior high school, high school, undergraduate and graduate college. Got a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Mississippi State University in 1993. Received an M.F.A. in Painting from the University of Mississippi in 1996.
As an adult I have lived scattered. After graduating I lived in several towns in Mississippi - Columbus (one year), Tupelo (seven years), Utica (6 months), Jackson (2 years), Clinton (2 years). I lived in Louisville, Kentucky from 2006 to 2017. I currently live in Boulder, Colorado.
My life as a professional artist has been erratic. Never kept a studio for more than a year at a time, aside from working where I reside. Taught Art as an adjunct/part-time instructor in college for over ten years. I have worked in screenprinting, graphic design, newspaper advertising layout, furniture design, cosmetic prosthetic production, as a portrait painter. The longest full-time job I have held was for four and a half years in a State Mental Hospital as a Leisure Recreations Coordinator.
Four years ago, I got married for the second time. Three years ago my wife gave birth to my only child. Since then I have been fortunate enough to be a full-time dad (the greatest job I'll ever have!).
Beginning to make work. Right now mostly intaglio prints. Hope to start painting in the next year.
