Café Sabarsky

About

Located in the Neue Galerie, Café Sabarsky draws its inspiration from the great turn-of-the-century Viennese cafés.

Description

In 2001, chef Kurt Gutenbrunner was asked to open a café based on the fin-de-siècle Kaffeehaus to accompany the opening of the Neue Galerie, the showcase for Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky's lifelong devotion to German and Austrian art. Gutenbrunner took this opportunity to open Café Sabarsky, which features approachable Viennese fare (including an acclaimed, traditional breakfast menu) and German and Austrian wines and beers in an elegant but relaxed setting.

Café Sabarsky is outfitted with furnishings true to the period, including lighting fixtures by Josef Hoffmann, furniture by Adolf Loos, and banquettes that are upholstered with a 1912 Otto Wagner fabric.

Entering the restaurant requires a security check. It starts with a tough guard outside. We were seated by seven guests at a small table that fits a maximum of two people. After a larger table became vacant, we were barely able to get in because it was very crowded and we couldn't get our feet under the table. In a few minutes a nice and polite waitress arrived who asked what we would like to drink and from here we already forgot the beginning about the food. I can say that it was not tasty for me and neither for my friends, but the desserts were delicious and reminded me a little of Austria, but not all of my guests liked the desserts
This is an amazing place if you're looking to find a bit of Europe in NYC! Sometimes, you might get lucky and secure a table without a reservation or a long line, but I recommend booking in advance. The food here is incredible - from sausages and soup to desserts, everything is so delicious!Food: 5/5
Visited the museum which was just one floor of art not very spectacular and decided to try the cafe on the ground floor as well. The veal schnitzel was average it was on the outside but flavorless in the inside. The potato salad was pretty good. The cake was okay and the elderflower sparkling water was flat and there were no elderflower taste in fast it smell bad. Please don’t order this item. Service was okay they also give us bread upon request- we tried this out of curiosity and will not recommend if you are curious as well .
I absolutely love Cafe Sabarsky. The atmosphere is cozy and elegant and the servers are very attentive. Really liked their klimt-inspired cake, but definetly is an expensive spot worth coming to for the vibes over the food. They had some great pianist playing last time I was there. My favorite plan is grabbing a hot chocolate here, heading to the Neue and walking to Central Park. Will be coming again!
The best Viennese cafe you can find in New York, located just in the corner of the Neue Galerie. When you enter in, right away you can feel the old time atmosphere. Food is delicious, my favorite is trout, and then of course the excellent Austria coffee and superb Apple strudel and Sachetorte. Only problem is the restaurant always has a long line, so plan ahead.
It is a fancy place to have a nice brunch or lunch on a Saturday with the family. The wait line is inevitable, as it is a popular spot. The food is ok, nothing too special. The food was a little too salty for us. Kids loved the hot cocoa. They mentioned the flavor was rich and it wasn't too over sweetened. Ambiance is rich, but temperature wise it did feel a bit drafty inside. I visited the gallery with my 2 children and husband prior to coming in.
One of the places you must visit in New York. 1 Go to website and check hours and days of operation. See what options suit your schedule and budget as the place isn't cheap. Try to find one where reservations are available. 2 If you cannot make a reservation and have to stay in line: there 2 lines: one for the caffe another is for museum. Choose the one for caffe. You can go to museum after without standing in another line. Also, while standing in line, visit the shop. The food simply delicious. Museum very small and lovely. Contains several works by Klimt including The lady in gold.
Dessert review: Exceptional European desserts with the perfect texture and great taste. Prices are slightly higher but are acceptable $11-$14 given ambience and European feel of the place. There is usually a bit of a wait 15-20 at peak times to get in be sure to be in Cafe and not museum line. They also have a very nice collection of coffees, milkshakes, soups, sandwiches and wines. Of the desserts, we really liked the Apple strudel and Sachertorte. Vegetarian options: A few soups and sandwiches. Wheelchair accessibility: Yes
Great cozy dining room inside the gallery. Feels just like a cafe in Vienna. Entries are great, dessert was a just average.Recommended dishesWiener Schnitzel, Bratwurst Mit Sauerkraut & Rösterdäpfel
Worth the wait. The wiener schnitzel was fantastic and the potato/cucumber salad was the perfect complement I think there might be horseradish?. Not a place to sit and linger -- it's small and there's often a line -- but the food is so good that you'll inhale it and be on your way. I wish I'd saved room for dessert because everything in the display case looked great.
