Cafe SouthSide

About

We're your community coffee joint serving certified fair trade organic coffee & espresso from small farmer cooperatives through a worker owned company!

Description

Cafe SouthSide closed in February 2018. We centered Queer, Trans, Gender Non-Conforming People of Color, Indigenous and Black folx and welcomed everyone in revolution and healing. We served fair trade organic coffee and tea from small farmer cooperatives, baked goods and food. We had a community garden outside our door and Powderhorn Park around the corner. We housed the Brandon Lacy Campos Free Library (now temporarily located in The Exchange), a free public computer and helped connect folx with community, resources, opportunities and services. We were a hub for LGBTQ BIPOC community and beyond. Stay tuned for info about what we are working on next!

Some of these reviews are not applicable as the Cafe is under new ownership now. I really like Cafe South Side. I love coffee shops that also have food. I work a lot from coffee shops, so it's nice to go to a place where you can hang out for a long while without unhappy glances from employees totally understandable at restaurants AND they have food. The food is kind of ...eh, but they have it. There is a community garden right next to the cafe, which is just beautiful in the Summer time. I've always had decent service and their WIFI is consistent. I love Mayday and Peace Coffee, and some others in the area, but they are always packed. Here, I can usually get a table, and work in peace for a couple of hours. Check it out.
I go way out of my way to get my morning coffee here. They have a cozy "you're home" feel, their coffee is good, and their food is solid cafe fare. But even more importantly to me, they do great things in the community. They offer space to queer artists, support groups, general advocacy organizations, religious congregations, and more. They empower Minneapolis and the greater metro and state regions...may we never lose Cafe SouthSide.
These reviews are for South City Cafe, the old business at the location - this. The new business is called Cafe SouthSide and they have great staff, coffee, espresso, food and atmosphere! Cafe SouthSide has another listing on Google and we are working to get the listing corrected.
I come here mainly to support a bisexual/trans/queer community hub rather than the food. The food & beverages are fine though. Very kind & generous people who run it, they do a lot of work to support our communities esp for low-income/ homeless trans & queer youth.
I don't know of any other cafe that has the supportive neighborhood feel that SouthSide does, and I have been looking. I know people who considerate it a second home, and although I don't, I love that they do. Small, quaint, positive, progressive, and a decent cup of coffee. I love it.
I got my first cold press coffee ever here. No flavors, "just the goods" as the awesome barista put it. And let me tell you, it was a religious experience. Well definitely revisit as soon as I can!
In a city of pretentious coffee shops which serve delicious coffee, don't get me wrong, it's great to have a coffee shop like Cafe SouthSide where you can go and feel welcome. It is a wonderful community space that I truly appreciate.
Quaint little coffee shop snuggled in south minneapolis. LGBT friendly. Awesome veggie alternatives. A cute little garden outside along with a few seats. There is even little library inside.
Excellent little coffee shop with a peaceful atmosphere. It's a wonderful place to hang out. I got a Chai Latte and it was fantastic.
One of my favorite queer-centric places. I go here when I want to see people who reflect my identity. Great drinks, staff, and community
