Of the seven show caves in Texas, Cascade Caverns is unique in that it is the wettest and with 95% active growth, the most alive.
Cascade Caverns is an "up-close and personal" kind of cave. Our guided tours are small, limited to 15 people. Our guides are knowledgeable and friendly. Cascade Caverns is situated within a 105 acre private park. We have tent camping (primitive or with electricity) as well as full-hookup RV sites. Walking trails (approximately 1.5 miles) abound with native plants and wildlife. See herds of whitetail and axis deer along with lizards, rabbits and rock squirrels. The Caverns were also the setting for the Civil War era novel "The Hermit of the Cavern" (original title Ein Verfehltes Leben - A Wasted Life, 1876; translated 1932) and the movie Father Hood (1993) starring Patrick Swayze.
The beauty of this living cavern makes it one of Texas’ finest caverns. It is host to the albino Cascade Caverns Salamander (Eurycea latitans), which is only found in this area of Kendall County. It is also home to Tricolor bats (Eastern Pipistrelle), cliff and leopard frogs, and various bugs such as cave beetles and crickets. The cave is full of formations such as soda straws, "chubby" stalactites and also has unique solution domes, an underground waterfall and several lakes. So don’t forget your camera.
