I went through Catalpa for my psychiatric appointments from ages 16-18. Each month I was given an entirely new cocktail of meds with very little consideration of the amount of medications/kinds of meds they were putting me on. For example, for around 3 months at age 16 I was put on 5 medications at once, which included an SSRI, an antipsychotic and a benzodiazepine that I was taking every day. From what I remember, I was put on around 15-20 different medications within a year, many of them being taken in succession with eachother. The lack of intuition they have to provide actual psychiatric resources along with prescribing medications to children is incredibly alarming to me, and I now have a fear of even taking medication as a result of this. I felt as if I were a guinea pig for medications. I did not feel in control of my body nor my mental health while being provided psychiatric services here. Do not take your kid here.
In 2023 all staff should be showing up in person, especially the doctors. In a children's mental health facility, children should be able to see their provider in person. Not doing so tells children that the pandemic is scarier than the boogy man. Science and data have shown us this is not the case. Mental health providers should be showing their patients that the vaccine works by showing up in person.
My son’s therapist abruptly left. She wasn’t great to begin with but it was better than nothing. They cancelled his appointment the day beforehand. Unfortunately it’s been over a month and they haven’t assigned him to a new provider. Billing is a nightmare, and if you need a note for school absences forget about it.
Keep up the great work Catalpa! For over two years our son has received psychiatry services from an amazing APNP who spends time educating my wife and me on options that could help our son, but ultimately encourages us to take the time to discuss and determine what we as parents feel is best. We use MyChart to communicate with the provider if stuff comes up in between appointments and always get a quick response. We feel very fortunate to have found a place that is dedicated to pediatric mental health and Catalpa is truly a valuable resource to the Fox Valley community.
We had a horrible experience at Catalpa. My son reacted badly to a medication prescribed at Catalpa, I understand these things can happen. I called them during the weekend to know what to do, they didn’t have providers on call and sent me to my own primary care. I called the next day, one of the nurses was horrible!! She yelled at me telling me this was an emergency case, she didn’t let me explain my son was very slowly recovering but we needed a withdrawal protocol, no empathy, no instructions, just more rudeness. I talked to a second nurse, she suggested my son might have had a pre-existent condition of seizures, reason why he developed this reaction, no withdrawal protocol was provided. When she suggested seizures or a major condition, my heart sank. Their attitude and lack of compassion will forever stay in my mind. Catalpa turned their back on us and left us all alone. My son’s pediatrician and neurology department confirmed it was a catatonic type of reaction to this medication, no seizures, nothing else. Again, I understand these things can happen. I was more surprised by the lack of professionalism and lack of empathy of the staff. When you have a child with special needs you really need empathy and compassion, not someone yelling on the phone not letting you talk and express your concerns. You need someone medically standing by your side. You are just a desperate parent looking for answers not a healthcare professional. After a six weeks ordeal, we are still dealing with the aftermath of this horrible experience.
I’d like to give negative five stars. Strong words for this place. I would not recommend catalpa health to anybody who is looking for group therapy, based off of my experience. I also conversed with other group mates who noticed it was also a bad experience for them so I know it’s not just me. The therapists and staff were far too unprofessional and biased to be mental health “professionals.” Everybody in group therapy should be treated equally to one another but instead, they prioritized everybody over me and treated me like a joke and never took me seriously. They not only exposed MY private scores and information to the group which is extremely unprofessional and an invasion and illegal!!! They also lectured me when I was interrupted and I politely and assertively stood up for myself and they told the interrupters that it was okay and continue. Which is far from helping either of us but teaching them that it is perfectly okay to interrupt other people and not care that you are being rude and that I should just shut up and accept it. I was bribed with points to be extra nice and baby a groupmate because she isn’t willing to cooperate and they didn’t feel like dealing with her and trying to help her. When I accused the therapist of bribing me, she said “We just won’t call it bribing,” but it in fact was LITERALLY bribing. They let far too many things slide, for example, a physical poster on the wall stated that we are not allowed to share personal information and we are not allowed to talk about triggering topics. They never stopped anybody from talking about the utmost triggering topics, and when we expressed our concerns that we were triggered, they told us to, “just ignore them.” If you have triggers, you might know just how hard it is to simply ignore somebody shamelessly talking and joking about the most extremely unpleasant, descriptive and disturbing topics. It is not that hard to keep people in line from talking about those kinds of topics but I guess it’s too hard when you’re a catalpa therapist who received their degrees and license from clown school. All of what I just explained is just the tip of the iceberg, and to some it might not seem that bad, but when you are mentally unwell and needing guidance, going to therapy just to be ignored and made to feel worse, only makes you feel more mentally unwell. Every single person in that group therapy was being mistreated in some sort of way. I came out of catalpa worse than when I went in and I didn’t even stay with them the full expected term. I had to drop out because in a meeting with my parents and the people in charge, I gave them a week to treat me better and actually help me or I’d be leaving, but after that it all got much worse. I did not stay the week I gave them. It absolutely disgusts me that they’re called mental health “professionals”. Catalpa is not worth the money.
Not happy! Having issues paying the bills and being asked to pay bills twice. QR code to help pay bills that comes on invoice, Does not work. This led to having a small amount in collections. Called collections to pay, they show nothing there to pay. My wife called to talk with the billing team while I was on the phone with collections. They informed her that the over $200 bill I paid yesterday still needed to be paid, so she paid it. We would like the money that we over paid back please.
I’ve gone here for a year. Spoke to a receptionist about getting meds refilled. She proceeded to tell me that she wouldn’t refill my prescription because I’m now over 18. I told her I’d make an appointment with my primary doctor but in the meantime I need my meds refilled. She told me she couldn’t do that and that I should basically stop my meds cold Turkey. Any nurse would know that’s not alright. I told her that, and she proceeded to tell me that I apparently have not been taking my meds anyways because their data isn’t showing any refills which is completely inaccurate. The receptionist was extremely rude and telling me false information so I finally asked to speak to a nurse. She said she would transfer me and ended up hanging up on me. I have the whole conversation on video because I was amazed she was telling a 18 year old to stop taking mental health meds cold Turkey. Don’t recommend
Very clean building relaxing music. A smaller private waiting room for longer appointments. Fun hand outs describing the fish in their aquarium. Overall nice environment
Catalpa Behavioral Health has been awesome for my son. When we moved to the area, we really struggled with finding a new child psychiatrist for him - most places had very long waiting lists or weren't accepting new patients at all. Catalpa was able to get him in fairly quickly and his new doctor is amazing. He is open to discussing and trying alternative medicines like herbal remedies and CBD as well. We are very happy with Catalpa and will continue to recommend them to friends with special needs children
