Cecil H. Green Library

Description

The Cecil H. Green Library (commonly known as Green Library) is the main library on the Stanford University campus and is part of the SUL system. It is named for Cecil H. Green.Green Library houses 4 million volumes, most of which are related to the humanities and social sciences. Libraries elsewhere on campus cover specialized areas such as Business, Law, Medicine, or Engineering.Books from Green and other Stanford libraries are being scanned as part of the Google Books project.HistoryThe earliest library at Stanford was in the inner quadrangle. It was housed in one large room capable of accommodating 100 readers. This was replaced in 1900 by a separate building on the outer quadrangle, named the Thomas Welton Stanford library after its major donor. This library was recognized as being too small, and a new larger library in a separate building was begun, but it was destroyed in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake before it could be occupied.A major new library was approved in 1913 and completed in 1919. This building forms the older portion of the Green Library. In 1980, a larger annex was added and the library renamed for Cecil H. Green. The original part of the building is now known as the Bing Wing for Peter Bing, who donated a substantial amount of money for fixing it after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

Some beautiful spaces for studying and reading. Check out the Lane Reading Room for the classic library reading hall experience. Check out the Bender Room high in the Bing Wing for great views of the Main Quad and a glimpse of Memorial Church.
Beautiful library with many places to read and study.
This library lives up to what one would expect from Stanford - and that is quite a high bar! It has incredible, voluminous collections and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The staff are friendly and the whole institution follows covid safety procedures very well
Very nice library beautiful grounds though not open to the public, only to Stanford students. Look forward to going here when things open up.
This library has a lot of different study spaces depending on what you like. There is a new part and an old, classic looking part. It's a great resource- and the coffee place right outside is extremely useful for when you need a break and a recharge.
Quiet, inspirational, and motivating. Dive into that new research assignment or explore critical books fostering self awareness...I'm readings "Of Song & Stitches"...a little song to keep you going...

Deep resource for serious research. Official Govt depository. Book scanner. Conference rooms. Quiet. Restricted.
I love this place. It is very peaceful with nice study areas in the first floor. Public can use it ~7 times a year. Updated magazines. I don't know much about their book collection
I have really good memories of this place from my grad student days: self-study reading and assignments in the quiet study nooks on the second floor with lovely views of the surrounding greenery and ample laptop charging plug points, group meetings for class projects in the conference rooms, outdoor reading/discussions on the benches on both the Bing Wing side facing the quad and the East Wing side facing the "Shumway" fountain / Meyer library, little study breaks at Coupa Cafe right outside their spicy Mayan hot chocolate / mocha is the best!, and of course the media and microtext center mostly on Friday evenings to borrow free movies to watch at home over the weekend and when watching with friends, trying to convince one of the others to go drop off the DVDs at night in the outdoor drop-box to avoid late fees.
