The Children's Gateway Garden at Cesar Chavez Park created by WCHA through grants and donations, it is an ADA compliant garden open to the general public.
The Children's Gateway Garden was conceived as a place for children and their families to learn about organic growing, environmental responsibility, and healthy living. By creating a space that is simple and easily accessible for all people, no matter what age or ability, this becomes a much more likely possibility. Busy parents can come for a short time to clip some herbs, or pick some fruit, without a major commitment. Grandparents who can no longer garden at ground level can come with grandchildren and enjoy raising fresh fruits and vegetables again. Anyone in the community can come and sit and enjoy a beautiful garden. A true community garden, there is no charge to plant or harvest in the garden. Take what you can use, leave the rest for others.
Primarily used by the City of Long Beach, Parks, Recreation and Marine for their after school and senior programs, this Garden can also be utilized for contract classes, as well as volunteer events. Although there are rules about using the Garden, it does not have any membership fee or ownership of beds. It is essentially self-policing - we expect people to be responsible and take ownership of this community driven and installed project.
This project was funded with a combination of grants, city, state and federal funds, as well as generous donations from various businesses and members of the community. It was built and installed by many, many volunteers, as well as local businesses. We are grateful for all who contributed to this wonderful project. We hope you enjoy it!
