Chaffee Crossing Historic District

About

"Hair today, gone tomorrow"

Description

The Chaffee Barbershop Museum not only lets the visitor 'step back in time' to that day in 1958 when Elvis got his symbolic army haircut, but serves to honor the effect Fort Chaffee had on the state of Arkansas and the important role it played in World War II and every decade following.

"The Chaffee Crossing Historic and Entertainment District is a rapidly developing area with a microbrewery, a winery, a bicycle shop, a salon, event centers, and plans for new restaurants and retail shops within the year. The Barracks at Chaffee is a $30 million renovation project in process that will see WWII-era Army barracks converted to shops, restaurants, apartments, and Airbnb units. A whiskey distillery, a second winery, a coffee shop, and a coffee brewing company will soon open their doors and tasting rooms.Nearly 40 miles of trails connect the area to nearby attractions ncluding the AR Colleges of Health Education, the AR River Valley Nature Center, Wells Lake, Torraine Lake, pickleball courts, golf, soccer, and RV parking."

Went there for the Veterans parade. I thank all of them for their service. The parade and the setup for it was really great. Some of the food vendors prices were a little high. $8 for simple nachos.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree
This is where Elvis went for his first Army haircut. He stayed 3 days. This is not only a fun place to stop to see where the 1st famous haircut took place, but also see some amazing historical pieces and get info. They are trying to do some remodeling of the building where Elvis stayed. Friendly and very informative people. I highly recommend this stop. Easy to find.
I also visited this museum and was totally surprised with all the information on Ft Chaffee. My tour guide was Rod Williamson through the Barber Museum and this one. He was so informed and I was in awe with his knowledge of the history of the area. I was born near Ft. Chaffee and my dad barbered there in the 50's. When I returned to Ft. Smith in the 70's my friends and I got to know many of the Weekend Warriors. However, the history of German POW's there in the 40's was shocking! There is so much history I didn't know. Some of the Vietnamese refugees were housed there in the 70's, which I knew about. I worked for Donrey Media Group at that time. Anyone that was military and stationed there would be surprised with the items and information that is stored in the museum. I recommend anyone that has passed through the gates of Ft. Chaffee visit! I was headed back to Memphis and look forward to returning to spend more time scouring the area.
Annoyed carrier, Kiowa helicopter and howitzer were excellent. But nothing was going on.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
The Chaffee Crossing Historic District includes the Barbershop Museum where Elvis got his famous hair cut when he joined the army and Chaffee Museum. Camp Chaffee was built in the early 1940's to train World War II soldiers and it is an inspirational place. Don't miss the Veterans Day Parade in November. Last year more than 700 floats participated in honoring our Veterans.
Parking needs improvement. Lot of areas closer to vendors where you could park and not have to walk as far. I am disabled and cannot walk far distances. Had to leave before really getting to see area
Nice museum which covers lots of interesting history of the barracks. The very friendly docent gave me a full tour even though I got there near closing time. And he took my picture with Elvis!
It was OK. I'm not sure Fort Smith knows what to do with the place. Urban development isn't necessarily a good thing.
Nice place to visit a lot of history. Its one thing to do on a Saturday.
Nice place to visit With family
