This is a very pretty somewhat eclectic mansion in the middle of a a large formal garden. The land is formally a part of Muttontown preserve, there is a trail that connects Chelsea Mansion ground to the rest of the preserve. There are two parking lots in the area. One is right next to the house and another one near Bill Paterson Nature Center. There is a green sign toward "Chelsea Mansion/Muttontown Preserve" on the right side of the east-bound 25A Northern Blvd. If you miss this turn, next right turn to Muttontown Ln, will bring you the second parking near the Nature Center. The Third Parking near the equestrian center off Jericho Oyster Bay Rd is about 1.5 miles away and could be used if you plan a longer hike that includes Muttontown Preserve. The house and the ground is in pristine state. We visited in February but it is definitely worth coming in the spring when everything is green and blooming.
Steve Lampasona is an impeccable artist and a vibrant teacher. His new studio at Chelsea Mansion is quaint and professional but also cozy. I would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn how to draw or perfect their craft. He is the man for the job. He makes learning fun and intriguing and proposes new perspectives and ideas on fundamentals. If you want to learn to draw, figure draw, water color, or any other medium, he is the teacher I would recommend.
My husband and I found this place by accident looking for an area with fall foliage on the Island. On Google it's described as a preserve. We had no idea it had a mansion from the Gold Coast era sitting on the property. We got nervous when we arrived because it felt like you were driving onto someone's private residence. We didn't go inside, we walked around the grounds which are beautiful. If there's a sunny fall Sunday, it's perfect for exploring this area. The mansion looks like it's used for catering events. If you want to hold the wedding of your dreams here that has a stunning backdrop, I would put this on the list of potential places.
The Chelsea Mansion and surrounding gardens is so beautiful it’s hard to describe it is another great example of the progress of restoration. The Muttontown preserve is right next door that makes a nice day trip combo. Every Spring the landscapers plant flowers, mow lawns, trim hedges, it is such a joy to see it all. There are also some very big turtles in the pond. And there are also mallards and if you approach very slowly there is a good chance you will see a Heron standing nearby. This place is actually open for business for Events including graduation parties Wedding receptions there was recently an outdoor car show. But if you would like to just go for a quiet hike outdoors in the daytime it is always open to the public.
We had fun walking around. Also our cats enjoyed climbing a tree:- we weren’t sure about bringing cats because of all the signs for dog not being allowed... also the signs indicated that the park closes at 4.30pm, but we were there way past that, so not sure what the actual closing time is. Overall, it’s a beautiful place to visit. Bring folding chairs and enjoy the nature!
It’s a hidden gem. Nice place to walk around. Bunch of rabbits, chipmunks and other wild animals just strolling around. Mansion is closed but you can have a quick walk around the mansion and there is also a shady trail walk near by. Parking lot. No restrooms.
We didn't get to go inside, but the grounds were very lovely!! This is now the top contender for where we take her wedding photos not too many people here either, would definitely recommend
Nice place to visit and to see how wealthy people from the past lived. They also have a "forest" nearby with some debris of mansions.
I was there in January but will make it back when the weather gets warmer. The grounds are beautiful, similar to a mini Westbury Gardens.
While lacking opulence of the neighboring estates, Chelsea mansion is a gem on its own.
