We are a genealogy-oriented historical society researching and preserving information on the Townsend families in the United States.
The Townsend Society of America collects, preserves, catalogs, and makes available resource materials of genealogical and historical significance to and for TOWNSENDS around the world.
"Putting people together" is one of the most productive roles the Society plays. Building Townsend family groups through research and DNA testing, surmounting brick walls, and expanding knowledge of one's ancestors is our specialty.
The first Townsends arrived on the shores of the North American continent before 1640. The Townsends have participated in many major events which formed the United States. The Townsend name is found in documents dating as far back as the 1200's.
The Townsend Society of America collects and preserves artifacts and written materials illustrative of the Townsend families and their many contributions to the nation's history. It assists and supports members with their family histories and genealogies. By way of our "members only" pages we provide the contents of those contributions, collections, and archives to our membership. Membership is open to all who share an interest in the goals of the society.
The Townsend Society is interested in ALL Townsends no matter where they live.
Our goal is to clarify and build Townsend family groups through research and DNA testing, to help people surmount brick walls, and to expand our knowledge of Townsend ancestors regardless of family group.
The Townsend DNA Project is at FTDNA.com and we currently have 468 members. If you test through our project, you may receive a discount. YDNA and autosomal tests are the most popular. The YDNA test can link you to a particular Townsend family group while the autosomal test may find Townsend cousins and resolve issues in more recent generations. For advice on DNA testing, please contact us at [email protected].
In the past we were a museum and research center but most of our holdings have been scanned and made available to members online including books and family Bible entries. We still have a small collection of items that mainly pertain to the Oyster Bay family on Long Island and some of them have been excerpted and included in articles in our Newsletter and Journal.
Genealogy and research help is offered by our journal editor. You do not need to be a member to receive initial genealogy guidance; more in-depth research is available to members. Please contact either [email protected] or [email protected].
