About

A Tennessee Historical Commission State-Owned Historic Site with a museum about the building and the history of Jonesborough.

Description

Located in the heart of downtown Jonesborough, the Chester Inn Museum chronicles the history of Jonesborough from its inception in 1779 to the present. The museum is located on the street level of the oldest commercial building in town. Exhibits include information on the State of Franklin, a diorama of Jonesborough in the 1850s, the history of the Chester Inn, the 1873 cholera epidemic, and much more. Many of the exhibits feature Jonesborough’s extensive collection of photographs. The upstairs parlor and dining room of the Chester Inn, restored to the Victorian era style of the late 1800s, are also open for viewing. Kids’ activities include a museum scavenger hunt, a coloring book that features some of Jonesborough’s historic buildings, and a primary source activity with the cholera epidemic of 1873. The operation of the Chester Inn is partially funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation – Tennessee Historical Commission.

Moved to this area in 2021 I absolutely love this quaint little town and it's history, This is set up as a small museum free to public and they have a donation box at front to keep its spirit alive. Learn a little peace of history it's amazing how travelers use to live and so many wholesome gatherings.
Downtown historic Jonesborough was a nice way to spend a quiet morning. It's a very slow conservative town, don't expect to find shops open on Sunday until after church but if you want to really soak in historic North Eastern Tennessee, this site the place to go. The small town charm is everywhere you look, most people will say hello to you as you walk by and everyone you come across will be helpful and quaint. It's an adorable area that is worth visiting if you happen to be in Johnson City, just try and take the scenic way in if you can. The countryside and houses leading in to Jonesborough are stunning and is certainly worth the detour.

It is a very nice house-museum to visit, if you are lucky and the person in charge is there, he will give you a tour on the second floor that is set in the time of the settlers
Very informative. Love that the chester inn is all revamped. They repainted the outside and remodeled some inside. Very nice museum and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful and they know what they are talking about when they do the tours. So check it out. It's worth it.
