I like most of the cops of Wilmington but I wish there was more policing of police and investigation of corruption after all the mistreatment false arrests false imprisonment and wrongful convictions of people of color and the mentally ill. Also more stories about heroic actions by good cops in the news would be nice.
I was in and out of trouble with the Wilmington PD in my 20's. Despite my transgressions I was always treated with respect. I remember one time I blew a red light on 17th. It was the day before thanks giving middle of the night. The officer allowed me to collect the cooking supplies for the next day, and gave me his phone to contact someone to pick me up. I doubt he was allowed to do that. No one answered, and I ended up having to walk. But it was my fault, I blew a red light while driving without a license. Officers always treated me with respect & dignity. Today, older, wiser, I have the greatest admiration for the men and women who protect my community. They do, indeed, put their lives on the line daily. I'm reading reviews here and I imagine that most are not citizens of this area. I have never been a police officer, but I can't imagine doing the job myself. They'd have to be on edge constantly. The video that recently went viral is not an accurate representation of WPD as a whole. I have never been stopped by police for anything other than what I should be stopped for. Traffic violations.
Using the b.s. line "conducting an internal investigation" to shield the egregious conduct of one of their officers lessens the integrity of the entire police force. It's conduct like this and the lackluster response from the agency that leads people to say all officers are bad. When someone in your department screws up, take responsibility and suspend him without pay. This officers inability to conduct himself in a professional manner is why U.S. citizens are losing hope in finding solace by turning to the police.
I have more respect for every single UBER driver now than i do the Wilmington NC Police Department. Is misinforming the public about a "brand new law," part of your duty to serve and protect? How about assuming an Uber driver could not possibly be a lawyer. I can understand why Sgt. Kenneth Beck may be confused however, anyone see where HE went to college????
Wilmington Police Officers have always been courteous, helpful and kind. They go out of their way to assist those in need. These men and women put their lives on the line EVERYDAY, to keep us safe. Keep up the good work WPD!
Was in a car accident on May 1st and Officer P.J. Kantor was on the scene. He was very nice to deal with and helped calm me down when I was upset about my 16 month old son. An older woman - age 75 - hit us, drove off the scene & came back acting like she wasn't the one who hit us, but instead another innocent vehicle who got hit by a third car He not only acted as a police officer filing the report, but also a detective, and put together what happened even though there weren't any witnesses. According to the damage on both of our vehicles and both of our stories, she hit me. Had my paint on her car as well. I was so happy he actually cared, because it's going to be a lot less of a headache dealing with the damages. My son was not injured at all by the way.
I have experienced the WPD on both sides. First, I have been investigated for wrongdoing and thankfully cleared. They are a lot more aggressive than most police forces i.e. I have lived in Raleigh for 20+ years and never had a run-in with the law, lived in Wilmington for 5 years and had several, but they are just doing their jobs. I have also required the assistance of the WPD and they have been the most professional, helpful, do anything they can people. I feel like most of the individuals on here writing reviews are mad because they got in trouble. Well, I guess if you didn't do anything to warrant suspicion by the police, you wouldn't have gotten in trouble. You break the law, they are going to investigate and prosecute. That's what they are here for.
The officer involved in this latest "power scandal"that we as a nation are all too used to is apparently still working and not on any paid leave. He was caught clearly lying on camera however this is of no matter to the department. Are these the men you want protecting our communities?
Thank you to the officers who responded after our 911 call to our daughter's apartment building on 9/22/16. Your prompt action helped to save a life. Truly appreciated! Grateful parents from New Jersey.
This department is shameful. "Conducting an internal investigation" into Sgt. Kenneth Becker's abhorrent treatment of a law-abiding citizen. Such a typical BS line when this dirt-bag cop will get paid administrative leave or a slap on the wrist at the end of all this. Interesting how all the other officers were complicit in his actions. Not one of them stood up for the rights of the citizen. The United States clearly has a systemic problem within its police force. Let's at least be honest and change the motto from, "To protect and to serve" to... "To lie and to harass"
