Coe College

About

Coe College is a selective, private, nationally recognized four-year coeducational liberal arts institution providing superior educational experiences for students since 1851.

Description

Coe is a residential campus located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Iowa's second largest city - and only hours from several major cities like Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and St. Louis. The approximately 1,350 students enrolled at Coe make up a diverse population, representing more than 33 states and over 15 foreign countries.

Coe prides itself on its ability to give students a personalized education. The average class size is 16, with a student/faculty ratio of 11:1. The personalized attention and diverse student body contribute to a learning experience that is of superior quality - one that prepares them, and prepares them well, for life after college.

With more than 40 majors that range from accounting to art to molecular biology, Coe truly offers something for everyone. Coe College awards the following degrees:

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
Bachelor of Music (B.M.)
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.)
Coe also offers the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.).

Along with quality instruction from superb faculty, Coe offers an abundance of out-of-class opportunities to provide students with a well-rounded experience and solid preparation for the future. Within six months of graduation, 98% of Coe graduates are working or in graduate school. Within two to three years of graduation, more than 50% of Coe's graduates go on to do some form of post-graduate study. Typically, this involves law school, medical school or graduate study leading to a master's degree or Ph.D.

Coe is recognized as one of the most selective colleges in Iowa in terms of selectivity for admission, based on average ACT scores, percent of students in the top 10% of their graduating class, and percent of students in the top 50% of their graduating class. Coe is also one of only five private colleges in Iowa with a Phi Beta Kappa Chapter. Phi Beta Kappa is the most distinguished honor society and colleges selected for the honor are selected on the basis for academic excellence.

The attractive Coe campus, located near the center of Cedar Rapids, has doubled in size in recent years with the addition of new apartment-style residential facilities. The campus features a newly renovated dining hall with multiple food stations, an expanded Stewart Memorial Library, a well-equipped science facility and a modern fine arts center. Coe's oldest building - Stuart Hall - was rejuvenated to create nearly 36,000 square feet of new and renovated classroom space, laboratories and faculty offices. The renovation has produced a traditional interior look combined with the latest technology and amenities to create an inviting and highly functional academic environment to serve Coe students.

Mission

It is the mission of Coe College to provide students an education of superior quality that aims at preparing them for life following graduation. Our reason to exist as an institution is to ready students intellectually, professionally, and socially to lead productive and satisfying lives in the global society of the 21st century. As such, our success as a College will be measured according to the success of our graduates.

We believe that a liberal arts education is the best preparation for life. We believe that such an education allows students to discover what their real talents and interests are, and that it develops in them the skills, abilities, and habits of mind that will make possible a successful career in any field of endeavor, including ones that do not yet exist. Indeed, we believe that what defines a liberal arts education is its focus on cultivating in students certain fundamental abilities: the ability to think logically and analytically; the ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and speaking; the ability to use effectively computer technology; the ability to work productively as a member of a group seeking to achieve a common objective; the ability to make informed judgments, whether in the realm of ethical behavior or in that of aesthetic appreciation; the ability to foster and sustain an attitude of intellectual curiosity and creativity; and the ability to recognize and honor true excellence when found in any form or context. Furthermore, we believe that it is important for a liberal arts education to cultivate in students a desire to understand, a capacity for tolerance, and an ability to appreciate the ethnic and cultural diversity that make up humankind. It is the mission of the College to develop in students these abilities and attitudes, and in so doing to provide them an education that directs them toward a meaningful and successful life.

Coe College admits students without regard to sex, race, creed, color, handicap, sexual orientation, national, or ethnic origin. All students have equal access to the facilities, financial aid, and programs of the College.
