This is the official Facebook page for Johnson STEAM Academy Magnet School. This page will be used to communicate information about Johnson STEAM Academy.
Johnson STEAM Academy Magnet School is Cedar Rapids School District’s first Magnet school. Set to open in the fall, the JSA will serve current Johnson familiars as well as families from across the District.
So how will JSA be similar and different? A Magnet school is a theme-based school providing parent choice in the type of learning environment they want for their child. While JSA will remain a neighborhood school, parents outside the Johnson attendance area may apply to have their child attend the JSA. The application form to enter the lottery can be found at https://cedar-rapids.goodwinchoice.com.
With a STEAM-theme (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) JSA will create interdisciplinary connections while providing choice and innovative learning opportunities. Students will learn important 21st century skills, including personal leadership, collaboration and how learn and rebound from failures and setbacks. Students will be engaged in solving real problems in the school and greater Cedar Rapids community. “Learning science” might look like a student garden where they apply their math skills to engineer their plot and apply art to make it visually appealing or even tell a story. They may write, read, speak, and blog about gardening and their garden. They will work across grade levels and classrooms to learn together and discover how food makes it to market and about the financial side of food. They will use technology to explore, build, construct, experiment, and connect the content of the classroom to real contexts and situations.
The Cedar Rapids Community School District serves nearly 16,000 students and is the second largest school district in the State of Iowa.
The Mission of the Cedar Rapids Community School District is to develop 21st century learners and productive, responsible citizens.
