Description

What is a Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH)?

Long Term Acute Care Hospitals are designed to focus on patients with serious and complex medical conditions that require intense specialized treatment for an extended period of recovery time.

How does a Long Term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) differ from a General Hospital or a Nursing Home?

An LTACH is an acute care specialty hospital that provides highly advanced and intensively focused
care for higher acuity patients who have not responded to short-term treatment in traditional general
hospitals. In addition, an LTACHs average length of stay is 25 days as compared to a 3-5 day average in a general hospital. Whereas, nursing homes offer less intensive or sub-acute services typically after a general hospital or LTACH stay. Fundamentally, patients appropriate for LTACHs include those who may be ventilator dependent, suffering from multi-organ failure or deep wound ulcerations.

EDIT: Not sure if “Vicky R” is referring to my post, but yes, my grandpa could say a few words while he was on the ventilator. He would mouth words, nod his head, and say small sentences. I am a real person, not paid or an employee, and just wanted to share my experience with others. I added some pictures to show how he progressed from the time he was there to him at home. ——————————————————— I cannot express how thankful I am to the doctors, nurses, and social worker who have helped my grandpa through this difficult journey. Background info: He first got sick with COVID back in mid-January. He spent a month and a half in the first hospital then was transferred to a nursing home that didn’t treat him well. We had many issues with that nursing home and my grandpa was taken to the hospital for the 3rd time where they recommended Columbus hospital. I was contacted by the Liasion, Amelia, and she reassured me that they had a strong respiratory department and said transportation would be provided since I live in the Bronx, ny. My grandpa was admitted to Columbus hospital on 5/7/21 with a trach tube and was connected to a ventilator. After the first few days, we asked him if he liked it there and he said it’s much better than the previous nursing home he was in, so we were happy with that. Also, we noticed how attentive and kind the nurses and therapists were when we visited. We visited often because we weren’t able to see him in the nursing home before. On 5/19, the doctors had disconnected him from the ventilator and they had started walking him around. On 5/26, they said his trach tube was removed and he was doing good. On 6/9, he was brought home and is being provided with home care. This was amazing progress, especially after he was in the nursing home for 2 months with no progress. Wish we could have brought him here sooner. The social worker, Alisa, was great in helping us bring my grandpa home, as well as providing us with equipment and home care while he gets stronger. Again, thank you to everyone at Columbus hospital!
Not a review but a glance at days long past. I was born at Columbus Hospital, I even worked there in the Physical Therapy department under a tremendous boss and mentor Mr. D.J. I won’t give his name out without his consent. I worked there for 5 years, this was a true family, one of the likes we shall not see again. My mother Carmela Millie to her friends was the cashier in the cafeteria, everyone loved her, she was simply the best this planet could offer. I miss those days, I truly do, as the great novelist Mr. Thomas Wolf so eloquently summed up my sentiment, "You Can't Go Home Again", sad but oh so true............
If you want your family member to die then bring them here. My father wasn’t in the best condition he needed rehab and Columbus ltach definitely expedited his death, he arrived their with no wound ulcer to have an unstageable one in like 2 wks causing sepsis. They are using the covid situation to not allow family member to visit to hide their poor quality care. I recognized something wasn’t right and demanded him to be discharge or transfer to a hospital, he arrived to a hospital with worser conditions. I have allowed months to pass by before writing this review, if not I would have written an essay of our experience with this “facility”.
This place will let your loved one die. My father was there for 12 days, none of the doctors would listen to me when I told them something was wrong. I tried to get him transferred and they would not comply until his surgical wound was literally rotting and he became septic. At one point I was threatened with not being allowed back in the building if I didn't calm down and let the nurses and doctors do their jobs, and Now he's back at Clara Maass fighting for his life because of said nurses and doctors and their negligence. They should NOT be allowed to remain open. It is a death trap for the elderly on an assumption that they're dying anyway. All of them should be ashamed of themselves for what they have done to my beautiful, amazing father. Absolutely ashamed. ZERO STARS AND A LAWSUIT.
I'm sending a review solely on the staff care towards grieving family members. I'm not really sure about the treatment of patients because I wasn't really active in seeing this aspect when my grandfather was there. However, when he passed the staff was understanding and let us stay for a few hours and grieve. The security guard stayed with one of my family members and gave them water and helped them calm down. The nurses were sweet and checked in to see that everything was okay. I really appreciated that during our difficult time.
I agree the 5 star "reviews" are paid or employees. Someone on a ventilator can't speak... My uncle was sent here after battling covid. Communication really dropped off on the weekends. It was struggle made worse with multiple family members contracting covid and being in different hospitals. Communication is key! Unfortunately he did not make it and the series of events that followed were outrageous. We were waiting on paperwork to be sent when the funeral home we contracted started getting nasty calls. Threatening to send my uncle’s body to the county morgue if they did not pick him up. I called the hospital back and received the same threat stating he would only be allowed to stay 24 hours because they don’t have proper refrigeration to store someone longer than that! I was then told I had until 5pm or another funeral home would be called to pick him up! What?!? Saying “sorry for your loss” is pretty empty when in the same conversation they threaten you. If this is a result of the staff being overwhelmed with Covid deaths, the hospital needs to get them help. Unacceptable. Also where are his personal items?? The funeral home did not receive them. I’ve called and been told it would be looked for and yet no call back. The hospital who sent him there said it was sent with him. Missing phone, watch, and clothes. Where did they go??
On the 17 of February my husband was admitted to this facility our beloved Dr Raj sent us there and that was good . My husband got the best care I didn't know he would come out alive knowing where he was coming from at another hospital.that team started to work on him and I owe so much them praises the nurses are so professional friend all the nurse treat him I so well . The aides are amazing work so hard they even allow me to leave a little late at times. I will recommend anyone to Columbus. The male nurse in charge he is such an amazing team leader house keeping especially Rosey physical therapy I so cool Thanks team Columbus hospital.
My sister had been a patient here for over a month and has had wonderful care. The wounds are healing and she needed to be in a proactive attentive facility and she had definitely been taken care of with just that. The Uber service has been a help since our family and her friends live in New York it has been a blessing for us to come visit her more often. I know that she will continue getting great care with compassion and sincerity and professionalism at Columbus for as long as she needs it.
my brother was sent from another hospital to recover and his covid test was negative when he was transported to this place in ambulance. once in the hospital in couple of days was tested positive. than sent back to the other hospital. than back again to this place named now silverlake hospital here the food always gets to him cold not only cold always late for a few hours he does not eat the food and we cannot bring any food prepare in our home because of covid restrictions i believe theres no commitment with the ill and needed patients. we talk to the hospital social worker about the food but theres been no changes. my brother has many medical conditions. and is very low in weight. nurses are ok no complaints. he also complaints to me about call nurse pushbotton. he has an oxigen mask at all times which makes his mouth and lips extremely dry when he call the nurse most of times theres no response. theres not much care for him on on his personal higiene neither. i understand this is not a hospital and is more like a rehab place for patients which less busier than regular hospital.
I'm not a paid employee but I must say this small hospital that I wasn't aware was in Newark is well kept and everyone caring for my father was awesome friendly and professional and I even liked the little cafeteria store in the lobby but the only gripe I have with them is they established a policy during covid19 which I understand was to reduce the flow of traffic to the main lobby entrance so they closed it and they have everyone to go around the block to their back garage which mind you' isn't easy for senior elderly visiting their families because going around the block is equivalent to 4 1/2 NY city blocks, then ya have to walk up and around the drive ramp to make it to this long vestiview and reach security, now the second guard can see you at the front lobby and notice that a cab or medical transport bus dropped an elderly with a cane off but instead of being compassionate and understanding they just sit there like a deer stuck in traffic or just motion their hands to tell you to go around especially since the lobby is 100% empty and we have a mask on!! Hopefully this policy will change soon
