Established on July 7, 2009, the Confucius Institute at Western Michigan University was created through a partnership between Western Michigan University and Beijing Language and Culture University . It is the fourth such institution in Michigan and the 61st to be founded in the United States.
The Confucius Institute at WMU is a non-profit organization created to provide new Chinese language and cultural studies options for WMU students and faculty and to dramatically expand international opportunities for regional K-12 schools and local businesses. The institute's goals include:
* Teaching Chinese language and culture to WMU students and members of the greater community.
* Promoting international cooperation and exchange of students.
* Strengthening collaborations with local schools and community businesses to train teachers and offer language and culture workshops, summer camps, fine arts events and travel opportunities.
* Developing students ready to meet competitive market demands.
* Aiding WMU's development as a dynamic international university with strong ties to Chinese partners.
