CrossFit South Hills is my home away from home! All the coaches are very knowledgeable and the owners create a program that anyone can do. The workouts are scalable to anyone. You don’t have to be an avid CrossFit athlete to join. Everyone here is welcoming and friendly! I completely recommend CFSH if you are considering trying CrossFit and need a great environment.
I had been considering CrossFit for some time, but as a 53 year old had concerns if it was the right program for me. I wanted to improve my general fitness, as well as loose 30+ lbs that had crept up on me over the past 5 years or so. After my wife and son encouraged me to give it a try, I booked a consultation at CrossFit South Hills in July 2018 with one of the owners, Nicole Voelzke, who took the time to understand my goals in joining, as well as my workout history, diet and scheduling needs. The initial program included an on-ramp set of workouts to teach the basics and assess a baseline fitness level. I chose to continue private training sessions after the first three classes, and Nicole developed a customized program, as well as provided guidance on nutrition and diet. In the span of 6 months, I’ve lost 35lbs and have had consistent improvements in strength, cardio, and mobility. The workouts are appropriately difficult and intense, designed to push you to improve, but also built around your specific capabilities and any limitations you may have. There is a constant assessment of how your body is responding to the training, and an effort to ensure you don’t overwork or injure yourself. In fact, all of the coaches are aware of the members strengths and weaknesses, and encourage managing the workouts to get the maximum positive effect without overworking or injury. Additionally, the community of members at CrossFit South Hills is one of the best groups I’ve experienced in a gym environment. Everyone is very welcoming and made me feel comfortable very quickly. Any doubts I had prior to joining evaporated almost immediately. If you live in the South Hills and are looking for a great group of people you can accomplish your fitness goals with, CFSH is top notch.
On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, CrossFit South Hills is a slow-cooked beef brisket. This type of deliciousness requires time and investment, but the pay off in flavor is 100% worth it. My sister started doing CrossFit in North Carolina, and I had the chance to try it a few times there. And then, I began to see the strength she was gaining from attending 3x/week. I wanted in. I checked around for CrossFit gyms near me, and I creeped on CrossFit South Hills on Instagram for months before finally signing up for the On-Ramp intro session. The On-Ramp one-on-one coaching sessions works on technique and gym terminology and is so helpful. Originally, I signed up for 6 months. I've now been attending CFSH for over a year, and I love how strong I am. I also love that I can just show up, and there's a workout already prepared for me. The CFSH community is also great because everyone takes the time to cheer for one another. Coaches are also accommodating for injuries, offering modifications and other options if you can't do a movement. This helps to make sure that you can continue to grow strength while healing. The gym might be hard to find at first since it's tucked away off the train tracks with a bunch of other warehouses. There's plenty of parking. Inside the gym, there are cubbyholes for your stuff and a child play area if you have kids.
I became a member of CrossFit South Hills in August of 2016 and I am so happy I made the decision to join. I was intimidated at first, but I quickly learned that CFSH is the most amazing community of people where, regardless of your fitness level or age, you feel welcomed and encouraged. The workouts are challenging but are never boring they change every day. In only a few months, my body has become stronger and leaner and I have developed a mental fortitude that I never realized I could possess. The owners Mike and Nicole are incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, encouraging and, as an added bonus, they are really fun to be around! As a lifelong athlete, I can honestly say that my time as a member of CFSH has been one of the most rewarding experiences and I look forward to learning what else I am capable of doing!
Have been a member of CFSH for almost 2 years...The coaches are great. Can always leave a class having gotten feedback on my performance - both positive and constructive. If you enjoy challenging yourself and being surrounded by a group of tenacious individuals, you will love being a member here!
My wife joined CrossFit South Hills a year before I did. I resisted and questioned her decision saying we have gym equipment at home and can do all this stuff at home. We didn't, but we could have. I mocked her about being sucked in to the cult of crossFit, but finally she got me to take a class and I was hooked. CrossFit has shown me all sorts of fitness challenges and goals I didn't realize my life was missing. Each time I achieve a new fitness goal, it only makes me want more. The community of people there are great with everyone trying to help each other out and make everyone better. The reality is I never used that gym equipment at home, but I keep coming back to crossfit south hills because it is addictive trying to make myself better with that community of people. I am now officially a member fo the cult and fitter for it!
My box forever! Variety of class times, special events for the whole family and girls nights, great space for exercising in general. Even though I’ve been working out for years, taking CrossFit with the knowledgeable coaches and awesome classmates has gotten me into the best shape of my life, in my 30’s. Now i’m navigating my first pregnancy there with lots of love & support, in hopes of keeping me and baby as healthy as possible! Never plan on belonging anywhere else
When I needed to make a change in my life and was looking for help getting back into shape for the first time since high school, I'm 33 now, I started looking around the area for crossfit gyms. None of the gyms I had been looking into were the right fit for me, until I read about Mike and Nicole "Coles", at CrossFit South Hills. From the very beginning not only have I felt comfortable, I have felt empowered because of the coaching, the community, and the overall commitment from the staff in helping me accomplish my goals. In just under 4 months, with their guidance and a lot of hard work, I have changed my diet and I have lost 30 lbs. In a few months I'll be headed off to Army Basic Training and NONE of it would have been possible without their help and guidance. Whether you're looking to get into shape for the first time or enter the military at the ripe old age of 33 like me, there isn't anyone else I would recommend. Mike and Coles, Thank You!!
I came to Crossfit South Hills looking for a place that would have me lifting heavy weights. What I found was much more. They have a thoughtful staff of knowledgeable folks that will help you reach your goals. My strength, skills and confidence have all increased since starting. Furthermore, they have a great community of dedicated athletes who will cheer you on and help to motivate you. Contrary to popular myth, you don't have to be in great shape to get started; all you need is a willingness to learn, ask questions and an attitude of willingness to do work. Unless you're coming from another affiliate, everyone goes through the 4 week 12 session on ramp program to ensure that you have the basic skills necessary for entering into the normal classes. They start with the basics of bodyweight exercises and build from there into the basics of olympic weight lifting. My only regret is not finding Crossfit South Hills sooner!
This place has changed my life! This gym is now part of my lifestyle and I have met some amazing friends. If you are looking for a place to get fit and/or to meet amazing people, and/or to see what crossfit is all about - then this is the place for you! You wont regret it!!!!
