Crystal Lake (Newton, Massachusetts)

Description

Crystal Lake is a 33acre natural lake located in Newton, Massachusetts. Its shores, mostly lined with private homes, also host two small parks and a town beach and bath house. The name Crystal Lake was given to the pond by a nineteenth-century commercial ice harvester that sold ice cut from the pond in winter. It had previously been called Baptist Pond and used for baptisms by the Newton Center Baptist Church. The ice company felt that Crystal Lake was a better name for marketing purposes. In the colonial era it was called Wiswall's Pond.

I've been here twice with my toddler, but I feel like this place is run by a few teenagers who enjoying yelling at people. However, they seem a bit more lenient on allowing snacking on the beach even though that's against their extensive list of rules, or perhaps they are distracted. The beach is tiny, at best, so when I went there today, I was surprised to see the entire section in front of the lifeguard stand blocked off see photo That's about 30% of the 'beach' area that is cutoff bc it's a very "popular" spot to hang out for people. Mind you, Newton residents already pay $5 for this place that has no showers and not a proper place to change clothes bc the bathroom door doesn't exist. You need to wiggle yourself away from a toilet to put on back civilian clothes. Perhaps there's a secret room that charges another fee to change clothes. I only come here for the access to the water but if I want sand, I'd just stick my toddler in a wheelbarrow with some playsand and call it the beach.
Very small beach area to set up your chair and sunbathe. The docks are nice to sit on and maintained. A lot of the parents there weren’t paying attention to their very young children and I was watching them cause I was worried. I’d love some “adult only” swim hours set in place for us without kids.
Why overregulate the lake that should be community commodity? Just stop! Let people enjoy and get out of the way. Create more parking and get rid of the student staff. Liability insanity kills the last few free things that were fun about this place!
It’s a cool place just to relax and chat away the night. The beach area is small In the still photo, in the bottom right hand corner - you see some sand - that is the beach bathing area. Just a little more upkeep and the place would earn another star. Looks like it could use a touch up but, not bad. Extremely nice neighborhood and it looks and feels pretty safe in the area.
Only opens afternoon in season. Kids area is very small and shallow, kids over 4-5+ yo will feel limited. Floaties not allowed. Not coming back.
Perfect place to spend your weekend. Relax. Swim. Play. Note: No public restrooms available
Great Ppl and great place to relax and enjoy summer! Thank You!
It is way too crowded and much of the time the water quality isn't good. Also, it's definitely not a lake, but rather a pond. There also isn't much parking. It's in a city, so there's a lot of run-off from roads and yards when it rains, which finds its way into the pond. It negatively affects the water quality in various ways, including by providing food for bacteria to feed off of and multiply.
Beautiful lake surrounded by foliage! A very good place to just relax.
Love crystal lake. Perfect spot for a dip after work. Lots of swimmers, some sup boards, a kayak here and there. And dogs. Access to the monitored docks and facilities reserved for residents.
