Eckley Miners' Village Museum

About

Pennsylvania's historic mining town

Description

This page is run for Eckley Miners' Village Museum by the Eckley Miners' Village Associates.

Our Mission:
Eckley Miners' Village preserves and interprets for citizens and visitors the everyday life of miners and other mining company employees in a culturally, ethnically, and economically diverse company-owned anthracite community or "patch town."

Our goals are to present exhibits, tours, educational programs, and special events which broaden the understanding and appreciation of the family and working life of the anthracite miners, including working conditions, employment practices, and development of the labor movement within the industry. Major themes to be presented include:

-The relationship of the coal companies and their leaders to their workers;
-The lives of workers in a company town including working conditions;
-The family, social, cultural and economic life of the community, including medical services and health issues;
-The history of the organization of workers, formation of labor unions, and the important role of the anthracite region in the development of the national labor movement;
-The impact of the de-industrialization on anthracite communities in the region

(Our continuous goal is to) work with other groups whose valued guidance and support enhance the mission and goals of the Eckley Miners' Village Associates and the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
