About

The Historic Village at Allaire is a non-profit, living history museum, located in Farmingdale, New Jersey. Through the dedication of our visitors, volunteers, and staff, our goal is keeping history alive through events, fundraisers, reenactments, etc.

Description

The Historic Village at Allaire (known as The Howell Iron Works in the 1830′s), was an iron producing, industrial village owned and operated by James P. Allaire. Our museum opened in 1957 and is run by historic interpreters, school tour guides, performers, and volunteers of all ages. Our historic buildings include the Allaire Chapel, The General Store, Blacksmith’s Shop, Gardener’s Cottage, the Allaire Mansion, and more.

Allaire Village, Incorporated is licensed by the State of New Jersey to operate the 40-acre, Historic Village at Allaire, the site of James P. Allaire’s Howell Iron Works Company in the 1830s. Allaire Village, Inc. receives no state funding towards the educational programming presented throughout the year, but is strongly supported through private donations, membership fees, fund-raising events and patronage of our retail stores. Allaire Village, Inc. received an operating support grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State. Cultural Programs are made possible by a grant from the OceanFirst Foundation.

Beautiful historic grounds to explore. Great for all ages, wonderful for pictures. The museum is full of interesting history. The train ride is a lot of fun, educational and a blast from the past! The volunteers are very friendly, knowledgeable and love to answer any questions you may have. Even though this is state property they rely on donations and visitors to keep the grounds open and functional. Every donation helps since it’s all for preservation of the property and trains. Santa visits during the holidays and during the Spring the Easter Bunny makes an appearance. We can’t wait for the spooky events in the village and train. Fun ghost stories in the church and ghosts and ghouls wander though the property. The fire thrower is always a favorite. We have brought my 3 yo every year and she has a blast. The actors are very good about keeping the spook level PG. Great family events and activities!
A beautiful forest park surrounding historic Allaire Village. History lessons, trails to take, even a train ride for fun. Check hours on the website before traveling if you want tours, events, or a ride on the train. Bring a picnic and enjoy the atmosphere.
Love coming here! Many different trail options, plus the village is always fun to check out. General store and bakery were open as well when we went.
What a Great Place!!!! Beautiful , Educational , and a must visit park. You will see one of the States hidden treasures!!!! While walking the park you will meet staged location's with actual actors doing the things they did years ago. From the bakery to the carpenter shop and everything in between it a place you won't forget!!!!!
Super fun local history! Neat to see the blacksmith in action and to visit the general store. Volunteer gave a great tour of the original house.
Such an amazing place to visit! So much history....beautiful landscape, the bike trails and scenery!
The Historic Village at Allaire State Park is one of our favorite places to visit as a family. On the weekends we catch the black smiths creating in the shop who don’t mind my kids asking a million questions while they work, get treats for the kids in the bakery, and peek in the general store. The volunteers in historic costumes are full of information - we especially like it on days when we can catch the woodworker making toys & letting the kids guess how they were used. It’s fun to see what buildings are open on a given weekend & what demonstrations are being held. When we’re lucky, we catch glimpses of brides & grooms leaving the chapel - always a fun bonus. The $5 entry fee per person feels like a good value. My only criticism is the bathrooms by the village parking lot seem to have a drainage issue & are often muddy - but I recently discovered the bathrooms in the visitors center, which are cleaner & more comfortable overall. There’s a large & lovely picnic grove by the village parking lot. And another bonus - the village shares a parking lot with Pinecreek Railroad/the NJ Museum of Transportation, a working railroad that makes 2 short loops in the park just next to the village. The railroad is separate from the village but both are in the grounds of Allaire State Park and their close proximity makes the train a nice addition to a day at the village. I can’t emphasize enough how much we love this place.
Met w family for a day of hiking and kicking a ball around a big empty field. We brought our own snacks and enjoyed the weather while picnicking.
Capital to coast trail is amazing! 55 miles of paved path, great for biking, walking or running!
Perfect place to wander the trails or thru the historic village. Having the flea market on the property is a fun way to spend an hour or more picking thru all kinds of nostalgia.
