Fairmount Cemetery (Newark, New Jersey)

Description

Fairmount Cemetery is a 150acre Victorian cemetery in the West Ward of Newark, New Jersey, in the neighborhood of Fairmount. It opened in 1855, shortly after the Newark City Council banned burials in the central city due to fears that bodies spread yellow fever. The first burial in Fairmount Cemetery was a 24-year-old man named Lewis J. Pierson. Fairmount is still accepting interments.Along with Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Fairmount has the graves of Newark’s most eminent turn of the century citizens, including Clara Maass, who gave her life in the investigation of yellow fever. A high proportion of the graves belong to German families. Fairmount Cemetery includes large trees, rolling hills, and intricately carved monuments. Featured near the old South Orange Avenue entrance is the recently restored zinc Settlers' Monument, commemorating the founders of Newark. There is also a Civil War memorial. The modern entrance to Fairmount Cemetery is on Central Avenue.

Once upon a time, there was a small, old cemetery on the outskirts of town that was said to be haunted by the ghost of a vengeful woman named Sarah. According to local legend, Sarah was buried alive in the cemetery after being wrongly accused of witchcraft. She roamed the grounds, seeking revenge on those who wronged her and terrorizing anyone who dared to enter the cemetery at night. One fateful Halloween, a group of teenagers decided to explore the cemetery as a dare. They had heard the rumors of Sarah's ghost, but they didn't believe in such silly things. As they walked through the graves, they laughed and joked, completely unaware of the danger that surrounded them. Suddenly, the wind started to pick up and the clouds covered the moon, casting the cemetery into darkness. The group began to feel uneasy, as if someone or something was watching them. They decided to turn back, but when they tried to leave, they found that the gates were locked and wouldn't budge. Panic set in as the ghostly apparition of Sarah appeared before them, her eyes filled with rage. She began to scream and curse at the group, causing them to run in terror. They ran through the graves, dodging headstones and tripping over roots, but they couldn't escape the ghostly presence that was hot on their heels. Just as they thought they were safe, the ghostly hand of Sarah reached out and grabbed one of the teenagers, pulling him into the darkness. The others never saw their friend again and they never returned to the cemetery again. To this day, the ghost of Sarah is said to still haunt the cemetery, seeking revenge on anyone who dares to enter.
In 1981 and 1982 I had to bury both my beloved Stepfather Joshua and grandmother Mary. I remember the wonderful care and service the staff gave us to this very day. Today 2020 ..A service that is carried on by staff members Carlos. I forgotten to ask his last name but let me tell you. Carlos is such a wonderful very caring man. I’m so used to coming across grouchy and very cross staff members at other facilities in Newark. He was very professional and answered my questions honestly and straight to the point. I really appreciate his honesty and kindness. I needed information so that I could visit my grandmother grave site. It has taken me 30years to accept her death. I refused to visit her grave. My grandmother was everything too me. Even now I’m fighting my fears of going but I know that I must. I also needed to find out about purchasing my own plot. I know that I will have to leave here some day. I don’t want my children and family stressed out over my arrangements. Therefore I’m getting them ready myself. Thanks Fairmount for taking care of her all these years. Thanks Carlos for your great services. Your services has always been top notch Fairmount staff members.
I often visit my loved ones here but on today I stopped by the Krueger family mosoleum and as I peered through the window it was very beautiful inside I wish they would do a tour of the inside I would definitely pay to experience that beautiful place
They are so annoying like why are you closed today no holiday or anything just closed
This is a well kept cemetery. The office staff, grave workers, and security are all very thoughtful, caring and respectful offering loved ones the best service possible. I have numerous friends and family members at rest here.
Horrible hours, it does not make any sense how they are closed on the weekend like if people doesn't work during the week smh
