Forest Home Cemetery

Description

Forest Home Cemetery located in the Lincoln Village neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the final resting place of many of the city's famed beer barons, politicians and social elite. Both the cemetery and its Landmark Chapel are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and were declared a Milwaukee Landmark in 1973.The cemetery is run by a non-profit organization held in public trust. Profits from each sale are reinvested to insure continual care of the buildings and land. Its Victorian landscape contains over 300 species of trees, along with many ornate statues, crypts and monuments.HistoryA committee appointed by members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in 1847 established Forest Home Cemetery on what would later become Milwaukee's south side. When the land was selected it was located nearly two miles outside of the city limits along the newly built Janesville Plank Road (now Forest Home Avenue), in an area believed to be far enough from urban development to remain rural. The 72acre that were purchased in 1850 quickly grew to nearly 200acre by the start of the 20th century. Orville Cadwell was the first burial on August 5, 1850 but was soon joined by others due to an outbreak of cholera in the city. This location was dotted by Paleo Indian burial mounds and intersected a large collection of effigy mounds known to settlers as the Indian Fields. It contained over sixty earthworks which were catalogued by pioneer scientist Increase A. Lapham, including a rare intaglio of a panther, none of which remains today. An Indian village populated the corner near what is now Lincoln Avenue that grew corn on the hills. They most likely chose this location due to its proximity to the Kinnickinnic River.

"A non-profit since its inception in 1850, Forest Home has always welcomed people from all faiths and cultural backgrounds. It is an active cemetery and historical site. Located near downtown, its 200 acres provide visitors with a peaceful oasis of gardens, historic mausolea, architecture and ancient trees. Forest Home is a touchstone to Milwaukee's proud past and the final resting place for the city's most illustrious and notable citizens. Every year, our grounds host public events including a Memorial Day event, 5K run, Doors Open Milwaukee, historical tours and our signature Dia de los Muertos celebration with food trucks, performances, children's arts and altars to the dead."

I attended the Funerary Art & Symbolism tour at Forest Home Cemetery and would absolutely recommend it to others. Equal parts educational and entertaining, our tour guide was knowledgeable and well-spoken. There’s so much fascinating information to cover and the grounds are massive not to mention beautiful. I imagine these tours could be two to three times as long and still not come remotely close to covering everything! There’s an abundance of history here. Bring a water bottle and pack a snack, because you could spend hours exploring the cemetery after the tour.
We took a walking tour called "Deadbeats - Milwaukee's musicians". As someone who loves history and music, this tour was right up my alley. Their tour season is just kicking off so I added their upcoming schedule as there's something for everyone. Forest Home is huge, so we did a fair amount of walking. The tour had a lot of info about the beginning of the music scene in Milwaukee. Cool tour. We'll be taking a few more of these now that we did this one
Famous 19th Century cemetery serving as the final resting place for more than 1,000 civil war veterans and prominent people from Milwaukee's history. Beautiful grounds designed by a famous Wisconsin naturalist. Ideal for self-guided tours, birdwatching, and exploration! The site is full of amazing monuments. Be sure to stop by the office for a visitor's guide. Public tours and events available year round.
The staff at Forest Home was wonderful as our family arranged a burial. From selecting a site to planning a gravestone they were helpful and thoughtful. The day of the burial the staff member who accompanied us was sensitive and caring, and the ground crew was exceptional in helping us carry out the burial as we wanted.
Beautiful historical cemetery. Lots of history here and famous people have been buried here. It's so quiet and peaceful. They have a little museum in the building. It's a great place to take a walk, drive around or just to visit a loved one whom has passed. You can sometimes see deer around.
I thought highly of this cemetery until today... My father died a year ago, his full balance was paid and here we are months later and the paperwork was never processed for his stone to get worked on. Nor where we called after the balance was paid in full with any updates.. This really made our hearts hurt!!! Update... Funny how after the review they were able to contact us immediately on multiple numbers and of course when you were billing us we heard from you guys monthly... Of course they mentioned this review because that's all they care about!!! Image & financial gain!!! Sick!!!
This place is just terrible even after making a huge mistake they not only downplayed situation but pretty much turned the blame around on a grieving family ... Start communicating with your paying customers especially when it is in full!!! Instead of online apologies how about you actually reach out and do it in person!!!Visited onWeekday
OK so first of all there is nothing morbid about cemeteries they are a way to remember those that came before us and even though we live in West Allis we like to walk here to enjoy the beautiful trees and the unique grave markers and think about being at piece with our Creator GOD. Did you know back in the 1900s people would come to cemeteries for pick nicks and cemeteries were treated like parks. How cool is that?!?!
Gorgeous place to walk in the Fall. The trees are so beautiful! So much Milwaukee history here. I stopped in the office to pick up a map & pamphlet with info about the different graves & mausoleums & the woman working the office was so friendly & helpful.
Awesome cemetery with tons of history. Many famous Milwaukeeans are buried here. They have a lot of tours and other events at the cemetery. I got to see the chapel and old crematory under it.
