Mowing could be done more carefully. I'll never get over seeing grave after grave in the veteran section where the bronze vases were stolen, most likely to sell for scrap metal. It's pathetic. AND the cemetery didn't even tell my family about it. Security measures would be nice.
Upon my arrival today to visit my families graves, I was extremely impressed and happy how well the cemetery grounds have been improved. For years it had been neglected which was upsetting and not respectful to the deceased and their families. I did have to clear off the grass from a few of my families headstone tho. I understand there is a new company handling the lawn care. I certainly do wish the mgmt would also have them take time to blow away the grass and trim the headstones. I also wanted to update family records per the mgmt request and to get some additional info. I spoke with Scott Snarski and he couldn't have been more helpful and kind to me. I greatly appreciated all the time he spent helping me.
Three parts to this. * * * * * My father bought a plot with other VFW and/or American Legion buddies WWII veterans. They were all in one area. That was quite some time ago. He died in 1982 and was buried here. Apparently the cemetery fell on hard times after that. My sister Ali was the only sibling left in Milwaukee so she went there and actually had to use a hand clipper to tidy up the tall grass on our father's grave. No one was mowing and it looked awful. At some point, the cemetery was taken over by another company. Things vastly improved. However, we were horrified to learn that some low life went through there and stole all the brass? vases from the graves of my father and the other veterans, undoubtedly to sell to a scrap metal yard. [SHAME on both parties.] These were vases that were inserted upside down in an opening in the grave plate when not in use or turned right side up to use as a vase. Adding insult to injury, family members weren't notified of the thefts but found out next time they visited the grave of their loved one. It seems that Police were notified but "nothing came of it." It would have been nice to be notified of the theft and then kept apprised of the situation. That's water under the bridge. Ali, who clipped the grass earlier, died quite suddenly on 7/4/18. Although in a robot-like state of shock, I made arrangements for her. I learned that the ashes of a loved one could be buried in another person's grave. I had no idea! A small opening was made near the surface of my father's grave and my sweet little sister's ashes were placed there. The three remaining Winkler siblings each had ashes from our mother, who died in 2004. When Ali was cremated, I asked them to add our mother's ashes to hers. That way they'd be together always. I chose not to ask anyone to join me when my sister's ashes were buried. It was too difficult to be around people, however well meaning they were. Dean, the cemetery director, was immensely helpful to me during that time when I was so distraught and could barely think straight. He helped me choose a stone for my sister with her name - and my name for future use. Ali's ashes, mingled with the ashes of our mother, were joined with our father in his grave, and one day I'll join them. Dean joined me that day so it was just the two of us. I brought flowers and I read a poem. I was grateful and appreciative of the caring support and assistance provided by Dean at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery throughout the entire heart-breaking time. I would also like to add that before Christmas last year 2018, a memorial gathering was held at tha cemetery for those who lost someone. It was absolutely wonderful. It was healing and comforting to be surrounded by those who knew the pain caused by the loss of a loved one. Thank you, Dean.
We have visited this cemetery twice so far, and by chance found my husbands great great grandparents graves along with other relatives buried nearby. Looks as though the cemetery could use a bit more care but it is a lovely place.

It's such a good spot to visit, my kids are dying to come here.
