Fort King George

Description

Fort King George State Historic Site is a fort located in the U.S. state of Georgia in McIntosh County, adjacent to Darien. The fort was built in 1721 along what is now known as the Darien River and served as the southernmost outpost of the British Empire in the Americas until 1727. The fort was constructed in what was then considered part of the colony of South Carolina, but was territory later settled as Georgia. It was part of a defensive line intended to encourage settlement along the colony's southern frontier, from the Savannah River to the Altamaha River. Great Britain, France, and Spain were competing to control the American Southeast, especially the Savannah-Altamaha River region.Fort King George was a hardship for troops assigned there. A total of 140 officers (including Col. Barnwell) and soldiers died, mostly from camp diseases such as dysentery and malaria, due to poor sanitation (none from battle). The soldiers made up The Independent Company of South Carolina, an "invalid" company of elderly British Regulars, one hundred in all, sent over from Great Britain. Their suffering was largely caused by their own poor health, and inadequate provisions due to poor funding. Problems such as periodic river flooding, indolence, starvation, excessive alcoholism, desertion, enemy threats, and potential mutiny exacerbated hardships at the fort.

We were able to visit during winter encampment. Went on a Friday so very few people. The staff and volunteers did a great job. This is well worth the time. The kids got to complete the Jr. Ranger program and got swore in by the Ranger. This made for a special day as well. Thank you for a great visit.
The staff and manager were all extremely polite and kind and knowledgeable. The AC in the museum was a welcome reprieve while we learned about the local history. There was an ammunition demonstration in the fort that taught us about the customs in the first half of the 1700s. The fort is a good replica and has amazing views at sun set.
This was an inexpensive self guided tour lots of history in the museum. I liked the walk through the fort and the different buildings. The walk around the grounds helps you get a feeling of what life was like.
My family and I had the fortune to visit around Halloween. The Fort was not decorated extravagantly or doing outlandish trick-or-treating, but the volunteers were dressed up and having fun. The mayor of the town was there celebrating as well. He seems to frequent the fort and was quite friendly. They did have little stations set up with activities for the kids and pets!. It was a very pleasant experience. We took the time to explore the fort and talk to some of the volunteers there. Everyone was tremendously nice and willing to share information they had. They told us they frequently do reenactment weekends, where everyone there lives at the fort in the way they did when it was active. We weren't able to make it back to experience that, but we would have loved to!
This place is great! Very interesting to see from the British side. The museum is great for kids, as I couldn't get mine out of there! The fort and park area are clean. Bathroom and snack opportunities as well as a shaded picnic area. Very affordable, no parking fee and low cost for all. Very nice gift shop with very friendly staff. Definitely recommend and we will be going back!
We enjoyed our time at this historic site. The fort was our favorite building. Very interesting to see each of the four stories in it. The surrounding landscape is gorgeous.
We happened to go to the park the weekend of their 300th anniversary!! There were demos of Scottish dances, reenactments and folks in period clothes. We got to climb up into the tower where the fort was defended from. The folks there were dressed and reenacted cooking and living in the fort during those years. I am so grateful I was born 250 years later!!
Quick stop from Brunswick to Charleston. I am a history buff, so this place was right up my alley. Not to mention the beautiful scenery! * beware of mosquitoes! They want all your blood!
A really beautiful fort to explore with awesome structures like the big blockhouse and the officers' quarters. Also an indoor museum and a scenic nature trail. Cute little gift shop.
