This is one of my favorite Illinois State Parks. The camp hosts are super nice and helpful. I like staying during the week, it’s almost always practically empty. There are awesome heavily wooded and beautiful trails. The campsites are spacious, level with electric 30 amp hookup, fire pits and picnic tables. There are playgrounds, picnic areas and Ramadas in the park. Highly recommend spending a day or week here.
Nice Illinois state park, no entrance fees, nice pavilions. Trails were overgrown in parts, but the main sections were in good condition. Nice access to the river to cool off on a hot Saturday afternoon
Lots of stairs but the lake was pretty, nice to drive through park also
We are camping at site 35. We pitched our tent. It was a bit cool last night. It got down into the 30's. Walked the riverside trail that went by the Embarrass River. We also walked up to the Eagle's Nest Overlook. We took the rugged trail it was a bit challenging. However, there wasn't much of a view of the Embarrass River up there. We walked back along the road that goes to various shelters, the ballpark, Ridge Lake, numerous picnicking areas, and the north and south canoe launching areas. I don't think go far with a canoe this year as the river is to low. We saw a possum near Possum Hollow. There are two cabin here. We would have reserved one of these, but they don't allow dogs. The shower house is heated, which is nice this time of year.
We spent Wednesday 8/24 - Sunday 8/28 at the park. It was awesome, great walking trails, and lots of pavement to walk on as well. Alice was a great camp host, and very accommodating, and welcoming. We also met Duane park manager, real hands on guy, and also asked if we had any questions or needed anything just flag him or Alice down. Sites are very private, showers and toilets were clean. Would highly recommend!
We love hiking the trails and looking for rocks at the river. There’s always wildlife to watch and fun to be had.
Visited our friends, parks hosts. A great park to camp and relax!
Lots of hiking trails! Nice campground.
Great place to camp. Clean bathrooms. Quiet. Sites feel like you are only one out there. Great trails. And wildlife watching Dog-friendliness: No Hassel if you bring your furry friend. But keep it on a leash.
Great place for some peace and quiet had a daughter's bday there today highly recommend Playground: They are well kept and clean safe for the kids Restrooms: Outhouses available around the clock must reserve to have Pavillion bathrooms opened Picnic area: Great for picnics and skating
