A K - 8 grade Quaker progressive school
FCS is a progressive Quaker school, founded on the belief that every child is a valuable member of our community. We offer a challenging curriculum imbued with strong values of equality, simplicity, integrity, and environmental stewardship, rooted in our Quaker heritage. Our educational approach is experiential; students learn through classroom activities, field trips, projects that build on concepts taught in the classroom, and through collaborations that provide opportunities for decision-making and leadership. Time for reflection on these experiences gives students awareness of themselves as learners, and awareness of their impact on the class and larger community. The result is happy, engaged, confident and accomplished citizens of the world.
Friends Community School nurtures young people to be life-long learners, courageous risk takers, and joyous peacemakers; to discover that of God within themselves and others; and to reach their fullest potential as individuals and as contributing members of society.
It is of primary importance that FCS children come away with the feeling that they can make a difference in the world. Our goals for the children are that they:
* be active participants in their own learning, through exploration of home, school, and community;
* acquire all the skills necessary to enhance their interaction with the world, including both academic and practical life skills;
* have the courage to take risks without worrying about failure;
* develop a positive self-image;
* develop a sense of responsibility for contributing to their world;
* respect and appreciate individual differences;
* strive to be peace makers;
* and, acquire a life-long love of learning.
