Catering and Venue for your Private Party Ottawa’s Finest Caribbean Cuisine Fumi's Jerk Chicken Entrée – Dine In or Take Out Fumi's Ox Tail Entrée Dinn

Description

Fumi’s African Caribbean Restaurant is has been a family-owned grocery store since 1995. Known as Mugena African Caribbean Foods & Restaurant it changed its name to Fumi’s African Caribbean Restaurant in 2015 following changed of ownership. Since then, it expanded to include a African Caribbean restaurant and catering service in the Ottawa-Gatineau region as well as food delivery service in the same geographic area.
This grocery store and restaurant relied heavily on the support of local customers in its early years, and is proud to contribute back to the Ottawa community. Fumi’s catering service participates at several local events yearly, such as the Jazz festival, the Dragon boat festival, Canada Day celebrations, the Blues festival and the Jamaica Day festival.
Fully Stocked Grocery Store

Fumi’s store carries many niche products that you can’t find at your local Loblaws. In the produce department for instance, you’ll find the likes of fresh cassava, chayote, plaintain, avocado, mangoes, tamarind, bread fruit and fresh okra. Fumi’s also carries a variety of dry goods and spices for Caribbean and African cuisine. Specialty drinks you can find here include mango juice, Ting, Milo, Ovaltine, Horlicks, coconut water, cane juice, carrot juice, ginger beer and sorrel drink. The fish department is also remarkably well-stocked, with exotic varieties such as king fish, tilapia, bangamary, flying fish, butter fish and white belly shrimp along with red snapper, mackerel, salmon, mahi mahi and frozen shrimp. In the frozen foods section you can find frozen cassava, banana leaves, grated coconut, green pigeon peas and various juice mixes such as mango, guava and soursop.
Beauty Products

If the food selection wasn’t exclusive enough, Fumi’s also carries a variety of beauty products from the Caribbean and Africa, such as shampoos, soaps, hair relaxer kits, moisturizers, hair extensions and skin lightening creams. Health products familiar to many of their customers include cod liver oil capsules, SSS Tonic, Sulphur bitters, Tiger Balm and camphor.
The Closest Thing to Home-Cooking

One of the charms of Fumi’s, is the West Indian-Caribbean restaurant built right in the grocery store. The restaurant is cafeteria-style, and does have a seating area for diners to enjoy their food before lugging bags of groceries home. Fumi’s restaurant can take phone-in orders and offers take-out as well.

Fumi’s specialty is roti, but they also serve Jamaican patties, curries, jerk chicken, oxtail, various soups and home-made desserts and tropical drinks.

Really enjoyed my ox tail and the goat roti. Plantain was great, salad had a nice acidic taste to cut the spice and richness of the ox tail. Service was good, server was friendly and fast. No real criticisms, will certainly be going back! Was sad to see the Rochester pub go away but happy to see a the space in use for something good.
This restaurant is under new management and it is not an improvement. My husband and I went to the Friday buffet today and we were disappointed. The jerk chicken tasted off as if the chicken had been going bad before it was seasoned and cooked, the rest of the dishes were forgettable. We had to go to the counter and server ourselves water, and the owners barely acknowledged us when we walked in there was only one other customer at the time. And we were charged $38.00 for two people no drinks except water. We will not be going back.
Three of us went to Fumi's today for Friday lunch. Two of us ordered the Jerk Chicken Platter, the other Jerk Goat Platter. 1. took a while for the waitress to get our order the place was almost empty, other than another table of 3 2. Waitress asked us what we wanted to drink AFTER the food arrived, which took about 20 minutes or longer 3. My jerk chicken platter, the chicken was COLD, which makes me wonder when was it actually prepared? At least my rice was warm. 4. My friends jerk chicken platter, the chicken was cold, the rice was cold. 5. My other friends dish was warm to hot. 6. It was 15.99 for the platters but she charged us 18.99+tax which two of us foolishly paid, third friend told her she was overpaying, she argued but caved in... but then didn't say anything to the two of us... Will NOT eat there again...
Am from Toronto, visited Ottawa yesterday with my family and were seriously hungry and I personally chose to come try this restaurant out. Am assuming its a family run restaurant which is good but omg the service was terrible and nothing to write home about, am guessing because there is no competition, thats why its that bad. first off, how do you serve straws to customers with bare hands? zero star on that one. secondly, food should always be ready and customers shouldn't have to wait endlessly to get food. zero star on that one too the food on the other hand am sorry to say is bad, the salad on the food looks like its a month old, the sauce or whatever they put on the salad looks like watery sperm, the chicken is black rather than the actual colour it should be since it ain't jerk chicken, very stale, no taste at all. My son couldn't eat the so-called kids meal they served. One staff serving multiple customers in a restaurant? Not good enough. I won't waste my money at this restaurant if I were you ever again. A lot of work is needed to improve the service and everything about this restaurant, more so y'all should visit Toronto and see how its done out here if you care about your business. The 1star was an accident since 0 star is not available.
After ownership change things are going much better at Mugena/Fumi's. The owners are obviously hard-working, kind and generous people. The food has gotten a lot better. Oxtails were amazing! Great idea about Saturday soup special. Will come back for more for sure.
The only thing more authentic than the service was the amazing food. One of my top pics for a warm & welcoming space suitable for dinners with friends and family. Ps, if you're a carnivore and never tried goat, here's your chance to find out what you've been missing on!
I ate Oxtail with rice and beans. I enjoyed it. My daughter who has problem eating, finished her Egusi soup for the first time. Whenever I visit my kids in Ottawa, I will certainly come to eat some food African foods. This restaurant is highly recommended. I'm so impressed with the pleasant atmosphere.
The only reason this place even has a star is because the food is actually good. Apart from that, this place was highly disorganized. I went there for a birthday last night and there was ONE waitress serving about 20 people. I dont understand why they couldn't get at least 2 staff serving especially if the place was reserved for a birthday party. Apart from that, I had to wait almost 2.5 hours for my food which was not even complete asked for chicken and beef suya, only gave me beef because they supposedly "ran out" of chicken. Like I said, the only reason why I gave it even 1 star was because the food is actually good, but the management needs ALOT of work.
The food is amazing I will be back. And I give the five stars for the food. Customer service that’s a two star the lady taking my order WAS VERY RUDE! Hopefully her attitude changes soon because her food amazing. And we need more black businesses to succeed
Horrible service and cold food. When we arrived, there was no one around. We waited a while and when the lady working there showed up, I asked for a table and she pointed to the menus. She did not show us to a table, so we sat down. We waited for 20 minutes before she asked us what we wanted to eat. I asked for the red snapper with rice and peas and she said "No." Just no, nothing else. I asked if they were out, and she said "Yes." Okay, so I ordered the jerk chicken and half an hour later, I was given a plate of cold "jerk chicken" it was not jerk chicken lol, rice and peas the peas were dry af, a "salad" that looked really sad and was about the size of a forkful of food and some plantains that actually tasted ok. Once my friends and I finished our food, we went up to pay and waited and waited. The lady then charged us 26% tax. Lol. I'm just gonna go to a Jamaican restaurant next time. Good luck with your business I guess.
