Genesee Park is a park in Jefferson County, Colorado. It is the largest park in the Denver Mountain Parks system, with a total of. Interstate 70 traverses the park between exits 252 and 254 along the Lariat Loop Scenic & Historic Byway. On I-70 just west of exit 254, there are scenic overlooks for both directions for viewing the historic Bison herd, which live on maintained pastures on the north and south sides of I-70. The land for Genesee Park was initially purchased in 1912 and the park area was largely complete by 1926.The park contains two mountains, Genesee Mountain at 8284ft above sea level and Bald Mountain at 7988ft above sea level. The park also contains forests of ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, and lodgepole pine. The park's bison herd is owned by the City and County of Denver, Colorado. I am so happy that I live close to this local herd and can spend time watching them as the graze in the grass, and get fat for winter. There were quite a few babies in the head as well. Take some time and stop and watch these magnificent animals and a true moment to the American Wild West!!
So close to the city, yet so far away. The views are great. Remember!- stay at least 3 feet from the wild caged in animals. You never really realize how big a bison is until you see one from at least 3 feet away from the fence. Oh! What did dad buffalo say to his boy when he left for school? Bison!
My fav park for hiking, but needs more parking and people haven't been cleaning up after their dogs. Its absolutely BEAUTIFUL though, and the trails & wildlife are exceptionally well maintained. I much prefer this Trail to the more crowded, touristy ones. Also make sure to stop at the Gas Station at the exit right before the Park they have the BEST Chili & Nacho bar and sone really great homemade jerky.
Such a nice natural area! You can do different hikes around the buffaloes’ fence, even in winter the paths were very walkable. We had such a nice time and enjoyed the beautiful views of the mountains. If you are lucky, the buffaloes will be close enough.
Stayed at Chief Hosa campground for a few days and hiked around the park. Stunning beauty and the baby bison were just the best!
Hiked right at golden hour and it was gorgeous! Not crowded, fun bolder piles to climb on, and well made path that didn't feel too manicured. Lots of wildlife.
Great park in the foothills west of Denver. They have their own Buffalo herd. There are some nice trails for walking and biking. Also, great mountain vistas.
Beautiful trail, especially when you get away from the highway after 5min, quick and easy to drive from Denver - unfortunately no bisons for us to see
Beautiful space. Nice paths for hiking and biking. There's a herd of Bison I've been seeing during the day. Nice place to relax and enjoy the views.
It is just simply Gorgeous up there and the Buffalo is an awesome addition.
