The staff is great but the owner and a few managers, especially Todd, are terrible. Equipment stays broken for months at a time. More then half of the treadmills and other cardio machines are broken and only half of the broken treadmills are marked as out of order. The weight benches and resistance machines almost all have worn out pads. There are only 2 sets of weight clips on the entire gym. Only one squat rack. Even for a gym, this place smells terrible as if they don't clean it. Some of the managers are short-tempered jerks Todd who don't address customer concerns or even care to answer the simplest of questions. This gym could be better with changes in owner/management.
The reason I came to Gold’s was because Snap Fitness closed. I had been at Snap Fitness for 9 years and loved it there. The gym was clean, equipment was fixed immediately with 3 days downtime at the most, great personal training, 20 minute tanning bed with new bulbs, very friendly atmosphere. When I first started at Gold’s I liked it because there was so much more equipment, but as time went on, the equipment broke down and never got fixed. The squat machine has been down for at least 6 months, 3 Precor’s have been down for about 6-8 months, at least 2-3 recumbent bikes have been down, floors are dirty, equipment is dirty, Todd is buying cheap paper towels that disintegrate as soon as they are sprayed, always buckets on the floor due to leaking ceilings, the music is not the greatest and at times extremely loud to the point I have to shout to carry on a conversation with someone. The red covers need to be replaced on the equipment because they are down to the bare bone. If these problems were fixed, perhaps gym membership would increase. I stay because of the personal training, but if the machines are not fixed soon, I am not sure if I will stay.
The staff is great but the owner is a joke! NOTHING EVER GETS FIXED! Equipment stays broken for months at a time regardless of how many complaints are given to the front desk. Most of the equipment have worn out pads. There are only 2 sets of weight clips on the entire gym, all others are broken. Only one squat rack. I just discovered an extra unexplained charge for $50 automatically drafted from my bank account after I verified 2 times with the manager that my account will not be drafted again for any reason. This gym could be great with a better owner.
The only reason I go is the child care. Without that I can't go to the gym at all. In regards to the gym itself it is a dump. Ceiling tiles missing, water leaking from the ceiling, light bulbs are constantly out, your hard-pressed half the time to even find a paper towel to clean a machine. Also the equipment itself is in poor condition. Lots of machines that barely work, or are out of order for months on end. If you need a gym with childcare this place is good enough/better than nothing at all, but otherwise I'd recommend going elsewhere!!
Place could be great but management is running this place into the ground. Broken machines and rude managers. Last time I was here, one of the managers, a pervy bald short guy named Mr. Ingram, waited until I was in the locker room to tell me my Gold Card didn't sign in, even though I heard it beep when I scanned it and it has always worked before. I then gave Mr. Ingram the card and when I left the locker room there was a line of people so I went ahead to my cardio machine. 10 minutes later, Mr. Ingram practically forces me off the Cardio machine. So glad I've had pleasant experiences at every other Gold's Gym I've been too. After my experience here, I was tempted to cancel my Gold's Gym membership. Poor gym condition - it stinks. Rude management. Broken machines. Terrible environment metal music always on and always too loud. I've been to gold's gym all over the east coast and this one is by far the WORST I've ever been too.
I was a member previously at the old location and decided to give it another try. Boy was I wrong! Too bad there's not too many options around Chambersburg. Here's a list of the many issues that this gym needs to address before I could ever recommend it to anyone: Workout area Very cramped -- almost to the point of being dangerous if you're moving around between sets. Many machines are "down" for months at a time before repair. Speaking of repair, there are multiple holes in the drywall that have been there since I've joined. More for the members -- UNLOAD THE BARS AND MACHINES WHEN YOU'RE DONE! Not everyone warms up with 315 on the bar. This is something the night or early morning staff could address, though, instead of sitting at the counter doing literally nothing productive but saying "hi" and "bye". Cardio equipment is, at best, from the early 2000's -- very rickety and not properly maintained. As another Yelper noted, the TVs are kinda pointless as there's no way to hear them. I'm sure there's a lot more that I'm forgetting at the moment. Men's Locker room As I workout early in the morning, I shower before work. The shower stalls are in need of repair water leaks cause bubbling of paint in the wall which will eventually mean mold, shower curtains are hanging on by a thread and are slimy to the touch probably never cleaned, is about 10 degrees or more too cold in the winter time, and many ceiling tiles are missing. Cleanliness As you've probably noticed... not the cleanest place in the world far from it!. There's often chalk on every bar, empty ammonia packs and water bottles on the floor quite frequently, and, on one occasion, blood on the bar that was reported. The next day... you can guess. It was STILL THERE! This is a huge health violation that, if reported to a place other than Yelp, could land the in serious trouble. Staff I have yet to see most of the staff do much of anything other than sit at the desk on the computer or their cell phones. Any time you report an issue, no action is taken -- even from the owner. Also, there should be standards to the music being played. On a few occasions, unfiltered rap, with every obscenity you'd expect, was playing that could easily be heard from the kids area. If I haven't scared you away, good luck at this "gym"!
Issues with this gym: - No morning spinning classes that I ever see no matter what time I come in the morning or late morning - Poor up keep it facility including: no paper products, with toilet paper and paper towels bought from store instead of on professional rolls. Temperature in facility is cold in winter and on the warmer side during summer. Buckets all throughout gym because of leaking roof. Disappointed in this gym but it is one of the only ones in Chambersburg and it’s very close to our house.
I love the equipment! So many workout machines to choose from, you can isolate, build & sculpt every part of your body the way you want. And because the equipment is up to date & top notch I notice how their mechanics makes a big difference: super smooth and fluid pullys & functioning, so I am able to stack even more weight & resistance! So its easier to build progression of strength. Love the range of classes! My fave is Tuesday's 6pm STRONG class by Zumba: bootcamp meets zumba class, meets martial arts. Excellent syncronized music to movements and pace. Jenn is awesome. My quads & butt were sore for a whole week after just one class haha! Was so FUN. I was pumped & fired up afterwards: it definitely made me feel STRONG. The determination & commitment amongst the regular gym goers is very motivating, helps keep me on my toes. It's also nice to see mothers get back into the gym as Gold's has a kids club. Great technology & media integrated into workout spaces tvs & apps. Multiple dynamic rooms to work out in -great for when it gets busy in the eve. There is a range of different gym goers and an energetic social buzz in the eves when its busy. Quieter in the early afternoon which is also nice.
Can't say enough how bad it is, revert to all the other hate reviews below. Just please if you are smart enough to read the reviews and are serious about a gym, don't waste a cent here. Until it gets a new owner nothing will change. Stay away, their are plenty of other gyms in the area.
a. I signed up because this gym offered a "cardio theater which means a room where they play movies on a big screen while you run on the treadmills or use other equipment. This feature has now been removed from the gym so I tried to cancel my membership. UPDATE: Someone named Joe contacted me to let me know the cardio theater is still part of the gym. It may be a good idea to have regular meetings with the staff to keep them updated. Two different staff members told me a few weeks apart the cardio theater was being decommissioned. b. It has been over a month and they are still trying to charge my card. Very disappointing. UPDATE: They have now cleared up the issue and stopped the account. On the day I filled the cancellation form I paid a charge to bring my account to zero. Apparently there was yet another charge hanging out there. c. On top of this, when it was open, all the equipment I tried to use was broken. The elliptical machine rocked back and forth so it was barely usable. One treadmill didn't run at all. Another one worked but the belt you run on kept slipping. The projector for the movies would over heat and you would have to keep going to the desk asking them to reset it. Such a sub-par experience. Like something from the "third world." UPDATE: The person Joe who wrote me back, said that broken equipment should be reported so they can fix it. For the record, several employees I spoke to were well aware of the broken equipment. Fellow customers and employees on separate occasions commented to me that the manager does not address such reports. d. I will update this review pending whether they actually process my account cancellation. UPDATE: I am now updating this review, and thanks to them getting back in touch with me, I will raise it from a 1 star to a 3 star review. Because I am no longer a member, I cannot confirm if the issues have been fixed. I may try them again in the new year. OTHER FEEDBACK: The follow up to me cited lack of use with the cardio theater. If so, this is a chicken and egg scenario. The barrier of a customer walking to the front desk to ask for a movie to be played is so inconvenient that new customers are not likely to give it a try. Whereas other gyms with cardio theaters have movies on endless loop and no door. So people just drift in and discover it. That cannot really happen with the way this gym is set up. It's like the people running this gym don't have personal experience using a cardio theater. The idea is not to have a "formal movie watching time" where you start a movie and watch it for 90 minutes. It's just something to zone out on for a few minutes while exercising. Some people stay for the whole thing, other people pop in for 20 minutes and leave. People understand there will be light pollution from the open door, and that it won't be perfectly quiet with the zumba class in the next room. It doesn't have to be any of those things. The most critical thing is that it has to be: ready to go. I need to show up, walk in and have a movie playing. No waiting for projectors to warm up, no trips to the front desk, no picking through a binder of videos, etc. Just have a different movie running every day or every couple of days. Have some dim lighting, and an open door. Put a sign by the front desk with what movie is playing that day. These basic things make for a successful cardio theater. I have seen this done at other gyms. The other gyms I have seen with cardio theaters actually have the DVD player at the front desk, and there is a cable splitter. One part goes to the theater projector, the other part goes to a TV right at the front desk. This way the front desk person can see when the movie is over and restart it.
