My son absolutely loved his experience at Gracie Barra, NV. Typically a shy boy, he warmed up really quickly to Coach Anthony. There is clearly a strong camaraderie between all members of the GB kids program. On my son's very first day, the other students welcomed my son with open arms, and helped him participate in the class activities. He always felt included, and Coach Anthony was always understanding of his abilities and limitations. I highly recommend this program to all parents I know. It encourages good sportsmanship as well as strong skills and self discipline.Thank you so much to the whole GB team!!!! -Cole
I've been a martial arts practitioner for almost 20 years and I have been in many different schools. I can confidently say that the staff and instructors at GBNV are true professionals that have created a friendly and welcoming culture that pushes everyone to be the best version of themselves. I highly recommend this gym for anyone who is a beginner or expert, they consistently win in competitions
I have been training BJJ for close to 8 years and have been affiliated with some great teams, that said, North Vancouver Gracie Barra is one of the best I have been associated with. I have had my son join it’s such a welcoming place. The professors are knowledgeable, the front end is welcoming, and my team members, I consider them my brothers.
I've been practicing martial arts most of my life, seeing many different dojos, never saw such a great environment for kids to learn a martial art. My daughter is practicing for a year now, the instructors are patient and gentle, and at the same time guiding the students in building up confidence and discipline while improving techniques and having a lot of fun!. FIve stars! Lots of girls practicing too. Amazing space to learn, congratulations!!
When I got my black belt actually red/black because I was a teen back then in taekwondo, I realized the confidence that it had instilled in me. I felt that I could defend myself if I were to be attacked, and protect my loved ones in times of danger. But I was surprised to find another sensation growing within me. It was a sense of profound humility. It was because during the various sparring sessions, I saw clearly that there were levels in skills. Someone who devoted more time and energy demonstrated greater skill levels than ones who devoted less. I saw myself somewhere in the middle of the spectrum from the novice to the masters. I knew where I stood. It was humbling. I wanted to give my children the experience of such—a paradoxical quality of confidence and humility. In my search, I found, and you may have discovered as well, that often martial arts gyms are either excessively philosophical but impractical in combat from my limited experience, kung-fu may be like this, or too combattive without virtues I found MMA to be this. Of course this is from my limited experience. I tried out Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in North Vancouver, and I’m so delighted to have a gym that teaches great virtues and practical techniques. I couldn’t believe the quality of techniques that my children were learning. My 10 year old was already learning skills that I taekwondo had been reserved for black belts only! And she’s executing beautifully. And the impressive techniques seem endless. Professor Leandro in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, “master” is called “professor” has been a great anchor as a model of a virtuous adult for our children. He speaks and acts with a certain refinement and power, I believe it is his way of being humble and confident. I am hoping that this gym continues to operate so that it gives the Northshore community a space for the young people to explore the depth of human existence. It is somewhat sad, but it is now rare to find quality places where kids can cultivate appropriate virtues. Of course, at one point in time, you could count on home and school to be such places.
I’ve been training at GB North Vancouver for over two years. The instruction is phenomenal. Leandro caters to beginners and advanced practitioners alike. The community at GB North Van is as welcoming as any I’ve been involved in during my 7 years of practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Cannot recommend enough.
My boys absolutely love attending the classes at Gracie Barra North Van! The instructors have really created an amazing rapport with the kids and are teaching them life skills along with Jiu Jitsui.
Our sweet shy 6 year old girl was getting severely bullied at school this year by a kid telling her on a daily basis things like he is going to chop her up into pieces, give her 2 black eyes and more. It completely changed her, terrified her, she was scared to even speak, she became extremely anxious, scared to leave my side. We decided to try Gracie Barra Jujitsu should she ever need to defend herself from more than just words. I cannot say enough. Within 3 classes, she was smiling, volunteering, speaking louder. The difference is amazing! They teach kids to diffuse situations and use their voice. Along with a crazy amount of exercise squats, sprints etc. that I cannot even do, they give the kids talks on kindness, bullying, respect, and then teach them a manoeuvre should they be hit, headlocked etc. It’s a great group of kids and teachers. It is a very respectful, useful sport and all of my kids LOVE it. It’s fun and challenging for them. They’ve also done a great job of including and teaching my daughter with Down Syndrome as well, My 5 year old feisty, defiant fire cracker has started opening doors, saying kind words and doing laundry?! I rarely recommend things on here but if you have a Gracie Barra Jujitsu near you, the kids program is amazing. If you’re near the North Shore Gracie Barra North Vancouver Fell/15th is a must, the coaches are amazing. . It has been life changing for all of my kids.
