The Green Cemetery Association works to preserve the Green Cemetery, which is considered one of Glastonbury's historic treasures. The cemetery has over 1200 old tombstones, including 17 tablestones. These were erected to memorialize well known and/or wealthy citizens. One of Glastonbury's foremost citizens and its first minister, Timothy Stevens, who was hired in 1693 so the town could be formed, is buried in the Green Cemetery. The Smith sisters, pioneers in women's rights, are also buried there.
The Association maintains an ongoing project to preserve and restore these stones. The Association is also working on straightening and repairing tombstones on a regular basis and arduous and never-ending process.
