The Sexual Assault Awareness Support & Advocacy Organization serves as a safe space for survivors of sexual assault, while spreading awareness & support.
SAASA MISSION STATEMENT
We, the members of the Guilford College Sexual Assault Awareness, Support and Advocacy group (SAASA), hereby offer ourselves to the Guilford and wider Greensboro community as a collection of resources accessible to survivors/perpetrators of, and allies against sexual violence. We are committed to providing emotional, physical, and Student Conduct support to all community members without exception. This support can present itself in infinitely variable forms: however, we are particularly committed to risk reduction, bystander intervention, and education on risk factors as well as seeking out medical/legal resources pertaining to trans*, gender nonconforming, and undocumented folks. We also hope to improve existing programs for rehabilitating perpetrators as well as providing safe(r) spaces for survivors to speak about their experiences with their offenders.
We aspire to be a radical group that can accommodate the needs of all Guilford students, and as we grow in that direction we pledge to be critical of our own inherent biases and blind spots, and ask the community for its continuous critical feedback. As of September 2015, we are committed to working with clubs and groups both on and off campus with a special focus on addressing the intersections of sexual violence and race, ability, and gender identity. We also uphold the importance of maintaining an open relationship with Public Safety and the campus judicial system as integral for changing campus attitudes and actions around sexual violence.
As undergraduate students we do not claim to offer any professional services such as counseling, self-defense, or legal advising, and we reserve the right to refer inquiries for such services to the appropriate parties. One of the most important things we can pledge ourselves to is the practice of holistic and subversive self-care, and in our meetings we aim to honor this commitment to individual and group health by working non-hierarchically, keeping an open dialogue at all times for members to express their needs and concerns, as well as working to maintain the appropriate professional positions available on campus for students to be referred to.
With love and light,
SAASA
