T. H. DAVIS AVIATION CENTER
The T.H. Davis Aviation Center of Guilford Technical Community College, one of the most modern and best-equipped aviation maintenance training facilities in the Southeast, is located on the southwest corner of the Piedmont Triad International Airport campus.
Facility
The Aviation Center is a 36,000-square-foot training facility with dedicated shops for engines, welding, composites, electrical, and sheet metal. The facility includes a 40-foot by 20-foot paint booth and a 12,000-square-foot hangar. In response to the trend toward composite aircraft construction, Aviation Center faculty possesses expertise in basic composite construction and composite repairs, as well as composite manufacturing processes and quality control. The Center is currently developing, an additional 60,000-square-feet of training space to accommodate new and growing programs.
Curriculum and Programs
The Part 147 Maintenance School offers a Federal Aviation Administration certified Airframe and Powerplant curriculum, with Associate Degree, Diploma or Certificate options. The school also offers periodic short courses in the following subjects: A&P Powerplant prep, A&P Airframe prep, Non-Destructive Testing (Eddy Current, Mag Particle/Liquid Penetrant, etc.), Aircraft Maintenance Familiarization (Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, and Airbus series) and Inspection Authority prep courses.
The Aviation Center offers custom programs to train workers in specific applications. For example, GTCC has partnered with TIMCO Aviation Services to train 125 employees in aircraft structures. This customized training allows the college to work with companies to create training that matches industry needs for a world-class workforce.
The Center graduates 55-60 A & P certified students per year. These graduates have gone on to work for companies such as Honda Aircraft, Cessna Citation, TIMCO, NASA, General Dynamics, FedEx, and every major airline.
The Aviation Center is part of Guilford Technical Community College, which can provide training to meet all company needs -- IT, clerical, HR, administration, machining, logistics, and industrial electrician, to name a few. Students at the Aviation Center are trained on working aircraft, including T-39 Sabreliner, Piper Aztec, Aero Commander, Cessna 172, Piper Cherokee, and a Boeing 727-100. In addition, training mockups are available for every system on modern aircraft, including hydraulics, fire suppression, flight controls, fuel systems, cabin pressurization, ice and rain, landing gear and flight instruments.
Partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
An articulation agreement between GTCC and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University allows graduates of all three of GTCC’s aviation programs to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Aeronautics, on site at GTCC. This is an exceptional opportunity for students to attend the world’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious aviation and aerospace university while remaining in the Greensboro area. This program prepares students for careers in aviation as well as graduate studies at Embry-Riddle.
