Hempstead Lake State Park

Description

Hempstead Lake State Park is a 737acre state park located in Nassau County, New York in the United States. The park is located in West Hempstead and is one of three state parks within the Town of Hempstead. There is a quick-access entrance at exit 18 from the Southern State Parkway. The park contains the largest freshwater lake in Nassau County. The park offers picnic tables with pavilions, tennis courts, a playground, playing fields, recreation programs, hiking, biking, a bridle path, fishing, ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and a boat launch. The park contains three ponds for fishing that are stocked with several varieties of fish. Wooded picnic areas provide shade.HistoryThe central feature of this park is Hempstead Lake, first proposed in 1870 to supply water to Brooklyn, New York. The Mill River, also known as Hempstead Creek was dammed to form the 167-acre reservoir. Following the annexation of Brooklyn by New York City in 1898, the reservoir's use as a source of water declined. In 1925, the route of Southern State Parkway was laid through the reservoir's grounds, and the property was designated as a state park. The highway originally looped around Hempstead Lake's southern shore between exits 18 and 19. In 1947, an earthen dam was laid across the northern third of Lake Hempstead, straightening the route of the parkway across the lake. A decade later, Peninsula Boulevard was extended along the eastern side of the park partially reusing the parkway's old route.

Cost money to park here during the season. This playground is decent. For some reason there are a lot of flying bugs here maybe they’re from the water. Depends on the weather. We r here Aug 25 with cloudy weather and no bugs in sight. They have two free level 2 chargers here from charge point, which produces 6 kilowatts. Nice path next to the water. It seems that there is a side entrance to this state park which is always free to park at. It is located next to paddle ball courts and smaller playground. Very unknown and underrated. Why pay when u don't need to? Also people are very friendly here. Restrooms: The restrooms next to the main playground close at five but there are other restrooms further away next to the smaller playground section that close at sunset
Nice park with lake views and hiking trails around the lake. Stay on the red trail for stroller friendly walks or step to the inner trail closer to the lake for more hiking feel but still easy enough that you can enjoy with your toddlers. There are tables and BBQ grills and even a playground and carousel to enjoy. Restrooms are clean. Entry to park is $8. Carousel ride is $2.
Great spot for kayaking especially for beginners. One can rent kayaks there as well.
Beautiful park to go for a walk or a run. A place to kayak. There's lot of barbeques available, a seasonal carrousel and kids playground. Many areas to the park for different activities. It's pet friendly. Only thing I would love is for it to be cleaner on the trail by the water, you can find beer cans, broken glass bottles and trash people leave behind.
Since my last visit, the state has done some construction and made the park better. There is a new information and education center, they built some nice stairways to make climbing down to the water’s edge easier. They built a multi level structure adjacent to a boat launch area. We walked 4.2 miles around the lake and it didn’t seem like 4+ miles. During the week there are many people enjoying the walk or jog on the trails. There are horse trails as well so don’t be surprised to see some horses along the way. As a reminder, there are areas that are rather secluded, so be aware of your surroundings..
So happy we found this hidden gem!! It’s great for anything, picnic, beach day, play ground, biking, kayaking, running. Anything! I did a four mile run here then returned with my family at a later date. We had ice cream, and enjoyed the fun playground which had a whole musical setup. Bathrooms are clean and have water fountains. Love it here.
This place is great. Hiking & bike trails. Very clean & plenty of room to spread out. Nice gazebo for events available for rent, I believe. Nice playground for the kids. Picnic area is beautiful & you may bbq in designated areas!
Wonderful park for outdoor activities with amble parking spaces. You can have a beautiful walk in the lake which is just opposite to the park.
Lovely and beautiful park for retreat and picnic. The place has grills for bbq, wooden tables and water. Entry costs $8. Operation hours are till 8 pm but the park staff does not actually ask to leave 8 sharp. Can stay here 30-50 min extra. The park is clean and well maintained. Overall a nice beautiful place for a day out and a picnic.
