Henry Hudson Park

Description

Henry Hudson Park is a small park in the center of Spuyten Duyvil, Bronx in New York City, located at the intersection of Kappock Street and Independence Avenue. The park contains a small overlook above Spuyten Duyvil Creek, named Half Moon overlook after the ship Hudson sailed into the eponymous river. The park is named after famed English explorer Henry Hudson, who is also the namesake of the nearby Hudson River, Henry Hudson Parkway and Henry Hudson Bridge. In 1906 it was decided to dedicate a monument celebrating the 300th anniversary of Hudson's arrival in what later became Lower New York Bay. The project encountered multiple delays, but in 1909 the city obtained the money, and in 1912 a 100ft Doric column, designed by Walter Cook of Babb, Cook & Welch, was set in place, but shortly after, funds for the project, which had been raised by subscription, ran out. It was revived by Robert Moses in the late 1930s, and by 1938, the area around the monument had been designated as a park and a 16ft bronze statue of Henry Hudson, sculpted by Karl Bitter and Karl Gruppe, had been placed atop the column.

Beautiful park but lots of stairs that make it unfriendly for strollers, or anyone relying on not just walking. The southern side has Paul’s Playground and lots of other stuff for kiddos.
I am biased because I live very close to this park, but Henry Hudson Park is lovely and spacious. There are some dedicated people who I believe do their best to keep this park beautiful in the spring, summer, and fall. This winter, the central hill was utilized for a lot of sledding because of all the snow in February 2021. Sadly, earlier in the summer of 2020, Hurricane Isaias was responsible for laying waste on several ancient trees in the park. But there are many more to enjoy. A word of warning, I did stumble upon a huge patch of poison ivy in the northwest corner of the park along the main trail. While it didn't pose an immediate threat, this park is dog friendly, and if a dog accidentally wades through the brush on the side of the path where it is, it is possible they could roll around in it. I called 311 and reported it, they closed the ticket, but I think it was still there.
Aside from the Larger than life statute, honoring a guy for discovering a river Native Inhabitants traversed for thousands of years, one will find tranquility in this sparse patch of land. Dog-friendliness: People seem to welcome them and extend friendliness despite the absence of s dog run.
Grew up in Spuyten Duyvil so my parent's showed it to me for the first time. Always liked it. Very peaceful, clean, & not many people there all at the same time. Nice to go sit, & let your thoughts out alone. Nice to go, & take my parent's dog out over there now as well.
Henry Hudson Park is a bastion of serenity in Western Riverdale. A brilliant move seriously by city planners I'm not joking placed a playground across the street, instead of attached. This leaves HHP clean, quiet and, well, just a beautiful place to sit, talk, read a paper or all of the above.
Lovely short walk. The park is split in two parts. We had to cross the street to see half of the park. Beautiful greenery.
I very cool statue... right next to the highway.. drove by for years and finally was on my bike and able to go see this huge column base. Very cool history of who built it too! Peace
Small park with a few walking trails. The top of the monument is better viewed from outside.
One of the better parks. Close to me so I am here few times a week.
