The Highland Police Department practices community policing in this small village of 842.
Chief of Police Daniel Swinehart along with Officer Michael Havlik and Officer Brent Harris makes up the police department. We practice community policing with some of the events we sponsor listed here. Chief of Police Daniel Swinehart is the lead hunter safety instructor. He is assisted by four volunteer instructors with various skills and knowledge that enjoy teaching hunter safety. The department is also involved with bike safety at the Highland Elementary School. We teach basic bike riding skills from grades k to 4th. Each year the department sponsors a bike ride from the Village of Barneveld to the Village of Mound Horeb. We take the 5th grade class on a 18 mile bike ride on the Military Ridge State Bike trail to promote exercise and bike riding and making the right decisions in life. Starting in 2014 the police department will be promoting COUNTER ACT. COUNTER ACT is a program taught to 5th graders. The 5th graders will learn about drugs, alcohol, and violence and how important it is to make good decisions. After graduating from the program the kids will understand that there are other alternatives than drugs, alcohol and violence. For example bike riding, skiing, swimming, and hunting.
