Homeopathy is regarded by many as a natural system of health and wellness. It was developed in Germany by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843). It is now used in almost every country of the world.
Homeopathy is based on the law of similars. This law states that a substance administered in large doses will produce certain symptoms but if the same substance is given in very small and highly diluted form, it will relieve the symptoms. Homeopathic substances are supposed to stimulate the body’s ‘vital force’ to overcome the problem. These substances are broken down in minute quantities and diluted. The source of these substances are plants, minerals and in some cases insects (such as the honeybee). These substances are not regarded as medications.
The aim in homeopathy is to deal with the whole person and not a single symptom or body organ.
Homeopathic substances are used in various ‘potencies’ depending on factors such as the severity and types of symptoms. Homeopathic liquids are usually taken after mixing with a small amount of water. For maximum effectiveness, smoking, taking flavored substances, eating and alcohol consumption are supposed to be avoided at least thirty minutes before and after taking homeopathic substances. Other precautions may also be suggested by the manufacturers.
In general, few if any dietary restrictions are required when using homeopathic substances. However, in certain situations such restrictions may be advised. Homeopathic substances should be stored in a cool, dark place away from strong smelling materials.
