Our East Lansing location will always be special to us. For one thing, our founder, Mark Sellers, is an MSU grad and loyal Spartan for life. But it also was the first city we expanded into from our hometown of Grand Rapids, and we’re still blown away by the welcome we’ve received here, starting with the line that stretched all the way up Grove Street when we opened in the summer of 2013.
Back in 2012, the Detroit Free Press ran a profile on Sellers, whose original HopCat had become an unexpected, internationally recognized success. His phone began lighting up with pitches from property owners across Michigan eager to get a new HopCat inside one of their developments. We found the right fit in the ground-floor space at the Residences, a mixed-use project at Albert and Grove that became East Lansing’s tallest building.
Mark’s phone didn’t stop ringing – we’re now up to 14 locations (and counting) in Michigan and around the Midwest. We’ll continue spreading HopCat’s mission as far as it will take us, but we’ll always be grateful to the East Lansing and MSU community for proving this was an idea worth sharing.
