About

The i.d.e.a Museum inspires children of all ages to experience their world differently through art, technology, science, creativity and imagination. Art and hands-on activities aim to support early learning, nurture creative thinking and engage families.

Description

After 35 years as the go-to museum for original, fun, inspiring and educational hands-on art, a new era in art, creativity and imagination began Feb. 7, 2014, when the Arizona Museum for Youth officially opened its doors as the i.d.e.a. Museum.

The name i.d.e.a. is an acronym for: Imagination. Design. Experience. Art. It is the new museum’s guiding, creative thrust for the future that creatively enhances, improves and expands the use of art and art-inspired activities by adding science, engineering, technology and design in multi-sensory experiences.

The i.d.e.a. Museum’s goal is to provide even more opportunities for families to create together. Its passion is to develop individual and collective creativity in its many forms, not just art. The vision is to maintain a place for your child and the child within you to engage science, technology, engineering and math through an art focus.

INTERACTIVE SPACES INCLUDE...

1. Whiteman Family Exhibition Gallery:

This space will house three fun, educational and hands-on, art exhibitions that will be presented each year, incorporating S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, art and math) concepts through local, national and international artists’ work. Its goal is to inspire children to tap into their own imagination and creativity using art to appreciate different viewpoints and cultures.

2. HUB:

Like the central part of a wheel or a computer networking device where several routes meet, the HUB is designed for diverse activities leading the explorer to one’s own imagination. It is the intersection of imagination and experience through collaborative making, spontaneous creation, full-body movement, problem-solving and inspiration. Among the offerings are Rigamajig, which nurtures problem solving and design innovation, and Oodles of Doodles, which lets your inner child loose to collabra-doodle with your child and family.

3. ArtVille (a socks-only space aimed at ages 0-4):

Always a fan-favorite, this interactive gallery returns with a revitalized design to immerse visitors in the museum’s national, trend-setting, larger-than-life art town. Little ones will experience key developmental and neurological milestones birth to 4 years. ArtVille will continue to help shape motor skills, tactile senses, early literacy, vocabulary, self-expression and imagination through:
Wee Design & Build: A new space for early learners to imagine, create, be curious and discover. Tots will build with LEGO Duplo blocks, columns, roofs, bridges, characters and vehicles; create splashes of color in the lighted “Pixel Wall” or larger color mosaics on a specially designed light table.

Very hands on experience museum nice split area based on aged and cool curated space / gallery for focused visit. Go early, summer groups make this small creative space too hectic to try and contain your little people or group. Really great space for art, animation, building, problem solving . If you home study and need a place to demonstrate or relate lessons consider this a resource
For $9 it is my personal opinion that it’s not worth the price. However if you qualify for the $2 EBT discount it’s worth it for kiddos who are already walking. Infant area is small although clean, at least on this particular visit.
Loved this place, it was so much fun for my toddler. My only recommendation would be that they keep the toddler area for toddlers, there were much older children in this area when I visited that should have been in the all aged areas of the museum. They had fun and engaging activity areas.
Oh my goodness this place was wonderful! We had planned on going to the natural history museum and saw this next door and had to give it a try. So glad that we did. We brought four kids, ages 7 months to 6 years and everyone had a fantastic and memorable time. It's in the smaller side, but I think that was a plus as it allowed the kids more time to interact with the things that's were out for them and we truly never ran out of things to do, even after three hours! We also have a kiddo who uses a wheelchair and EVERYTHING was accessible to her! Such an amazing time for all of us and we are glad to have found this gem. We look forward to coming again!
We've been going to the museum for a few years now, and we love it! After two years we decided to get a membership so we could go whenever we wanted. The toddler area is fun for the kids, and I love how the children can express themselves in the art areas. WAY better than the phoenix one. If you feel that this place isnt good, its probably best to stay in Scottsdale. Thank you for always giving us a fun and safe place for us to go to.
I've been taking my daughter here since she was 1 and she loves it! It's super cute and there's so much for her to do. I always see employees walking around cleaning all the toys which also makes me feel better. It's a great place to bring your toddler to escape the heat.
My kids absolutely loved it here! We spent atleast 2 hours here just in the younger kid side. I have a 1 and 2 year old and there was plenty of stuff to keep them occupied. I recommend taking your kiddos here :
I love the idea of this place. My 17 mos granddaughter enjoyed it at first. One area is suppose to be for toddlers under 4 yrs however lately there has been older children there. They were very uncontrollable, rough housing and running over the little one. My granddaughter was ran over twice. I tried telling the workers there about it. They don’t seem to care. One even said the parents need to take care of it. But they don’t. So if you have very young ones really watch them. It’s not safe when older kids are there.
It was better than I expected seeing that it was a little smaller online. I liked the outside music making devices a lot. The inside is mostly mental activities. My daughter wanted to run and play on a playground, but it’s not really made for that. Lots of interesting crafts, artwork and educational interactive activities. The robot exhibit was really cool. My daughter just was too hyped to just look at stuff. The play area is designed for children 4 and younger. But my 5 year old went in there and enjoyed it. The play area is great for toddlers. The first thing that bummed me was not accepting the employee exchange admission program. We went to the Phoenix Children’s museum the day before and it kind of pales in comparison. Still a cool place to get the children’s brains going.
CHECK IT OUT! This museum is on the small side but my kids were still not ready to leave after 3 hours! It's full of active play opportunities, so don't expect to be passively entertained by videos or shows. One side of the building has craft stations make a paper doll or a cardboard house, giant versions of games like Scrabble and Connect Four, and hands-on activities like building marble mazes which my 11 year old loved, gears, and wooden book castle building. The craft supplies were well-stocked and staff made the rounds picking up regularly. This side also has clean restrooms and a small cafe area with vending machines. The middle has a small store, then the other side has a large play area that is socks only so make sure to take some or buy some at their store for $1-$2 a pair with a soft block building area, pretend store and restaurant, a small stage to put on a performance, a room for painting, a giant light-brite, and a small toddlers-only play area. This area is designed for kids 4 and under, but older kids are allowed. My 7 year old had a lot of fun playing along side the younger kids. Based on other reviews, I expected parking to be a pain, but there's a large free public lot across the street and street parking on the entire block. The staff was excellent! Shout out to Veronica at the front desk for taking the time to explain their reciprocity program we are members of another science center out of state which earned us 50% off their $9 a person admission and how becoming a member would save us money at other local museums. We will be back!
