Do not put your kids in camp here. Is it cheap babysitting in the summer? Sure. But it's not organized and I'd rather send my camper elsewhere where the communication is better and they at least pretend to care about inclusivity. We registered for two different summer camps and regret it. The staff are very disinterested in what they are doing. Every time we walk in the front desk staff is either telling us something different about how we sign in or they don't even acknowledge you. Apparently you're supposed to get a card to scan in and the first 2 days of camp no one gave us one and on the third day someone snapped at us for not following the rules. What rules? How about you put in your email that we will get a card to scan in and out of camp? The camp director sent a brief reminder/ welcome /info email for one camp, but not the other. I emailed separate times with questions and never received a reply. The free time play at the beginning of the camp is designed so you walk in, pick up a ball and start playing. That's great for kids who are confident and know other kids in the class. I watched my nephew stand there by himself for 15 minutes before I went down there and encouraged him to play with the other kids. Camp counselors were down there and could have easily invited him to play. Finally, there was no email letting us know that Tuesdays/Thursdays for camp are designated swim days and that towels/bathing suits would need to be brought to camp. I'm thankful the staff found something for him to wear in the post and found, but also just very frustrated with the lack of consistency and communication from the staff here. Overall, I'd suggest finding another camp where the staff aren't high school students or disinterested, miserable adults.
Nice, peacefull, and not a lot of customers. Which is perfect wn your trying to due super sets and not trying to wait for a bench or machine like all the other gyms.
Great facilities and group fitness classes. Comes with access to Maple St. Kalamazoo Y, which has a sauna, steam room, and hot tub. Friendly and helpful front office staff. Easy to book classes with their app. Childcare options are available while parents are busy, as well as extensive options for children's classes and camps. 4/5 stars because they lack the sauna, steam, and hot tub that Maple street has, but again, you have access to that with membership.
Very underwhelming facilities in my opinion. The previous Ymca I belong to was in Fort Wayne, and the two are no comparison. If the FW Ymca is a 10, this one is a 4. To make it worse, the staff seems disinterested. I’d say, go pay more money and join the Bronson Athletic Club
Chose to get a membership here over anywhere else and I am certainly not disappointed. My only complaint would be the limited open swim times. As a family we really enjoy swimming but honestly I am very pleased with our membership.
Not doing a very good job of managing the classes held in the swimming pool. Pool was closed on three occasions in June without prior notice. You must register the day before to participate in a class and their procedure sucks. I'm not happy.
I have been coming here for years and unfortunately the cleanliness of several areas have come into question since restarting my membership in 2021. The basketball courts look like they never have been clean and I have seen used band aids, torn finger nails, and chewed gum on the courts. I understand during a time where lots of businesses are short staffed the YMCA could so be dealing with this, but the cleanliness of the courts is unacceptable. During times where sanitation is heavily pushed I would have hoped these would be cleaned better. I hope this changes as I find this place one of the most affordable places to play basketball and work out during the wintertime, but these issues have made me question ending my membership.
Impossible to register for swim lessons at portage and maple Y. Even if you plan ahead, join the Y to have access to the first spots every spot is full within 2 mins. This also happened to us a year ago. If you know you have this kind demand why don't you put on more lessons?
Really enjoy tennis, pickleball, and working out here. It could be five stars. However, the facility is older and could use a little refurbishing. Lighting on the basketball courts is terrible. The pickleball courts are too close together. The tennis courts are great. Staff and programs are really great. Love body pump, pilates, and step classes.
I'm sure it's great for a lot of people but as a weightlifter who enjoys everything in on one place, traversing the building for different muscle groups wasnt my favorite.
