It's about an hour drive from the West suburbs and there is no entrance fee. I did cycling for about 10 Miles and then took the 3 mile walking trail. My recommendation is to skip the walking trails. It is very easy to get lost and the trail has fallen branches and shrubs all over. Bike trails on the other hand are fantastic. Not very crowded either.
Great park, really long, 10 mile mostly paved bike path that I loved! Many cool places to sit, hang out at the river or grass. Nice caming sites, very friendly and helpful hosts at the camp sites. Pretty well-maintained bathrooms with showers, warm water. No mosquitoes! No complains : ...oh there is also cool creek to walk around in, see crayfish, fish, sit by the water
It's a beautiful State Park. My kids played in the water. The water is not clean. I wanted to wash my hands and feet. But there are no water tab, sink....
A picturesque location with trails and many scenic views. There is a 10 mile paved walking trail, suspension bridge and many side trails to enter into this beautiful area. Picnic tables and pavilions abound. I have seen people fishing, playing and enjoying playground equipment. Bathroom facilities are not well maintained - built in porta-potty’s. NO SWIMMING - only because I had a local with me did I find out that people die annually because they swim and get caught in the undertow.
The park is very pretty though I didn't see any spectacular places like in Starved Rock. The trails are over 10 miles long which is good even for biking. I am expecting that there may be spectacular views in the fall and I am planning on coming. There is also a nice campground and some picnic areas.
If you live in central Illinois and are looking for a low key, peaceful, and pretty place to camp, hike, fish, and splash around in the river, Kankakee is a great option. Great fun for families, dog friendly, and plenty of places for picnics and group gatherings. Also, there are multiple playgrounds and areas for kids to have fun.
This was our Juneteenth celebration-- we made the right choice -- the park was not overly crowded and the other guests were diverse and friendly. Important to us was how dog friendly our experience was. Bring a picnic and have a great time Playground: Several different play areas and kid-friendly hiking. Dog-friendliness: Very dog friendly. Dogs must be kept on leash. Picnic area: Great facilities -- multiple shelter areas with grills, restrooms, playgrounds, and plenty of parking.
Camped here with an RV. Clean restroom and shower facilities at the campground entrance. Kankakee River Trail is great and fun to walk down to the shallow part of river with some water shoes. We’ll maintained place with lots of open space to play frisbee or whatever. Lots of fishing available, but I’m not a fisherman. Take a side trip to Indian Caves 10 mins away, it’s worth the trip.
Beautiful area to hike. It is not paved but it is a simple hike. There are some dangerous paths down to the river I would not advise. Watch out for poison ivy.
Amazing place for a picnic or barbecue party. Very supportive staff and people. A lady in the office was so humble to help understand. No cost if single or two or four but if a group of people then do reservations online or on the spot. Entering into the river is not recommended. The river is full of dirty water, snakes and prawns. Could be ideal for fishing. Dog-friendliness: You can bring your dog that's completely safe. Picnic area: Nice place for a picnic or having outdoor parties.
