Don Carlisle is a 33 year old musician, recording engineer, and producer living in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He has been helping other musicians capture their music for over 15 years, working with a variety of genres. In 2001, he recorded his friends’ pop-punk band The Average Distractions debut album with a rusty 6 channel Teac Mixer. He spent the rest of the next decade doing kung fu and playing in various bands, working as a pizza guy, Yesterdog guy, and left the recording up to fancy studios. In 2010, frustrated with sneaky dealings, engineers who wanted to control his sound, and spending over $500 on unimpressive sounding drum tracks at a professional studio, Don decided to start recording his own bands again. Never again would he let some “professional” try to Auto-Tune his singer, or use an amp simulator behind his back when there’s actual amplifiers laying around in piles. He ruined the house he was living in, turning the bottom half into his studio and putting holes in the walls. He called his house on Parkwood street “Studio Elsinore” and recorded Pearl Snap Wester Brown’s “The Protagonist” (GR), and “Million Eyes/Weirder” single for G A M M A W A VE S (GR), and “P.S I Hate You” for Flint Metal act After The Minor. In 2013, He opened Knavish Audio in the basement of Black Eagle Press and began recording the local punk/metal/garage/indie/DIY scene. In 2015, Don brought Knavish Audio out of the basement and into a great sounding room with a view of the river on Front Street.
