Beautiful state park with fantastic campground with nice level spots and very nice clean bathhouse.Dotty was the campground host and was exceptional . Dotty was there to greet us upon arrival and offer the information we needed for a lovely stay. The park offers a wonderful visitor center which sells t-shirt coffee mugs and candy etc The park has a very clean swim beach which is $6 per adult when lifeguard is on duty and free if there’s no lifeguard. Hiking trails are available as well as a marina.
As child from the 90s who went to Lake James before all the changes occurred, it was the best swimming area that I had. Now 20 years later after returning to Lake James with kids, lots had changed for the good and the bad. I like that there was more parking spaces, still have an outdoor shower, and multiple bathrooms with changing rooms. Be sure you keep your shoes on when going into the bathroom because it was always dirty from the wet floors. There was concession stand for you to purchase snacks and drinks and there was a snow cone food truck for you to purchase a sweet treat. Do bring money because there’s a fee to pay to swim! There was no atm machine but using cards were available. There are definitely other activities to do at the park other than swim such as canoeing, kayaking, & standup paddle boarding. There were boating access too for jet skiing or other big boat activities. The only thing I didn’t like as much was the sand. It used to have the softest sand but now it doesn’t. I do recommend coming to Lake James to try the other water activities! Restrooms: Dirty from the constant wet floor. Need some AC in the bathrooms. Picnic area: There were a few panic areas. It was either on a first come first serve or through reservations.
Great State Park! Pack a lunch - not many places to get food nearby! Happy hiking!
The beach was nice, the hiking trails were nice, but we would not recommend camping at Paddy’s Creek. The campsites, although well maintained, were WAY too close together and people are constantly driving by on the paved road right behind you. You could see and hear everyone around you. Bathrooms were decent and showers had hot water. Also, do NOT buy firewood from there unless you want wet firewood that does nothing but smoke. Very disappointed in camping here.
New Visitor Center was wonderful! Staff was helpful. Be sure to get an updated map as there are new trails. South Wimba trail was well maintained. We are looking forward to returning to camp.
Real quite and family oriented place. The down side is that if you're looking to go swimming here the swim area is by reservation only. Restrooms: Restrooms were very clean Dog-friendliness: Good place to walk your doggies Picnic area: Had lots of picnic tables with grills included. We had a nice family day out here.
A beautiful place to share with the family or enjoy fun aquatic activities, it is very organized, I recommend it
Beautiful park with plenty of trails. We drove around the park using 126. It was very scenic and refreshing. I will be visiting Lake James State Park more often!
Beautiful lake with picturesque views, didn't go fishing but think it'd be a good spot to try to go to catch a fish or two Picnic area: Picnic tables scattered around if you wanted to eat there
Our first visit to James Lake and we stopped in the brand new Visitor’s Center today and chatted with Shannon and Kenny who were both extremely helpful and very friendly! They just opened the new center on Sunday, Jan 22, 2023 and it’s gorgeous! James Lake is simply beautiful! We will be back!
