Description

Family owned and operated for 144 years, we have one mission: to serve families at a most difficult time in their lives.

Laughlin Service Funeral Home, founded in 1868 by the late James Burnett Laughlin, was originally located in Downtown Huntsville on the south side of the square. In 1892, Mr. Laughlin moved his funeral home to a brick building erected next to his home at the corner of W. Clinton and Gallatin Street. He operated his business until his death in 1906. His son, Humes Laughlin, continued in his father's business until his death in 1947.

In 1948, general manager John L. Purdy, purchased the funeral home, at our current location on Bob Wallace Avenue, from Liberty National Life Insurance Company of Birmingham, AL. In 1980, his son, John R. Purdy, became a partner.

John L. Purdy was recognized by the Alabama Funeral Directors Association with a 50 year service pin in 1988. The family partnership continued until John L. Purdy's death on July 2, 1996 at which time John R. Purdy became president. John's daughter, Loretta Spencer, became Secretary of the company shortly before his death. In 2005, Sarah Spencer Chappell, granddaughter and niece, joined the company continuing the family's commitment to Huntsville.

Our young grandson passed away July 18, 2019. Preparing for his funeral was extremely difficult especially while dealing with other family members and keeping things civil. I found the interaction with funeral directors, Russ and Steve to be most comforting. They were compliant to our requests and corrected those items we wanted changed. They were professional, courteous and oversaw all aspects of the viewing with ease. They checked on us regularly if there was anything they could do, and showed compassion in our distress. Laughlin’s services were utilized for both my parents funerals back in 98 and 09. We would more than likely use their services again, hopefully in a very distant future.
The staff were very professional and supportive. They clearly presented the pricing details when making the arrangements. I respected my wife's wishes for cremation and Laughlin had a good selection of urns. They did an amazing preparation of my wife. It wasn't until 2 days later I looked at her driver's license and the photo was almost an exact match to the viewing. Chills here. The only small negative is the audio in the chapel could have been better. Less reverberation please. I would highly recommend Laughlin to anyone.
This past month my brother passed away and we were unfamiliar with the process either cremation or burial, but when I met Perry at the funeral home, he was so detail oriented and informative. He made the process so much easier for us. He was so efficient and patient. He made calls to find out more information for us on pricing on different burial sites. We never felt pressured to make a decision, we were just provided the information. Bottom line: They know what they’re doing and they seem to care. The Bou Family
If I could give this place a zero I would. I have never ever seen or heard anyone treat family that has just lost their dad the way this place has treated mine! My father in law passed away and this just happened to be the funeral home that the hospital referred us to. Which we called administration today and advised them to no longer recommend this place to anyone. They lied about the cost and changed it each day we called. My father in law had no life insurance policy so we are all paying for this out of pocket. We found a cheaper funeral home and called to see what the pick up fee was and the first day they told us $450 and then after all the family discussed everything we called back and spoke with the owner and he told us the pick up fee was $580. Have some compassion people. I will make sure I tell everyone I know not to use this place.
I we are so grateful for you exceptional care that you gave to us during our time of grief. You did so much to take care of every detail. We didn’t even have to think about what steps to take to make it a beautiful tribute to mom and dad. We will always be grateful for how we got to say our goodbyes and the peace you gave to us. Please let everyone know how grateful we are. Thank you! Charles, Wendy & Hayden
The entire staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable and handled everything with dignity and grace. There were so many “little” things they did that were greatly appreciated. They gave us the peace we needed. We really appreciate y’all very very much. Thank you.
My father died August 13, 2017. Not something I expected or was prepared to deal with. On that same day my mother told me his body was at Laughlin and they were going to cremate him. I immediately called Laughlin and asked for them to contact me before cremating him so I could say goodbye. I never received a single telephone call from them. Laughlin states that they help the family and allow viewing for immediate family. I am his daughter. I guess it is obvious what kind of character it takes to be in the business of corpse handling. I am sure that my stepmother bought the cheapo cremation package. You have to come and view the body ASAP. So insensitive. I could not pull my self together so quickly. Laughlin does NOT include immediate family. Only my dad's third wife and her family. P.S. He had a Top of the Line burial policy. His father worked for Liberty National Life Insurance Company when they sold Laughlin in 1948 to John Purdy.
This place takes advantage of grieving families. Quoted price for cremation was $2900. I’ve never done this before so I thought that was the normal price. The guy said that it didn’t matter who else we called, all the other crematories use their facility for cremation anyway. We were going to go with them and not call around. You know, because we are grieving over our loss and the last thing you want to do is price check this type of thing. I mentioned the price to someone that has cremated before, and they about fell out their seat. I called around and turns out the price this place quoted us, is almost DOUBLE other places. I get that you ‘get what you pay for’ in life, but in this particular instance, there’s not much more they could provide for double the price here.
I was in charge of the Military Honors team for all of North Alabama and I can say that while dealing with all of the funeral homes in the area Laughlin was by far the mast proffessional. Their directors make sure that everything they do is done correctly and as promised. These guys are great. Keep up the good work.
Working with Sara made the whole process of planning the funeral as painless as possible. At a time when you are somewhat disoriented to say the least, it is nice to have someone as kind and patient as she was to help walk you through the process.
