I came to Howard Brown to be evaluated for a head injury. Before I saw a doctor, I explained my financial situation. I have been unemployed for the last 8 months due to a layoff and I couldn’t afford my regular doctor bc I cannot afford insurance. I was given forms to complete and the rep said I didn’t need to provide certain information. He told me that my first visit would free and every other visit would be $5 including the lab. Since I believed this to be the bill I decided to see the doctor who was great. Today I was shocked to receive a bill for almost $300. I cannot afford this bill for the reasons shared above. I emailed them but from other reviews I read it sounds like billing doesn’t respond. I am extremely displeased. Oh and they told my pharmacy to cancel my prescription bc they couldn’t reach me. I never received a call or VM from HB.
My providers are great but I should not have to say "you work at Howard Brown, you talk to a lot of trans and non-binary people so you should know not to assume gender by the voice" so often on the phone. Not misgendering people is kinda bare minimum for the type of healthcare provider Howard Brown claims to be like seriously, this is a basic thing to screen for in interviews, come on
The 2 stars are for the front of the office Reception & Intake Bait & Switch Operation: Went to Howard Brown because I was told they have a sliding scale. After the paperwork, I was told the visit would be $5. When the nurse that attended me said she wanted to run labs I explained that I am uninsured/unemployed so would need to know how much it would cost as I didn't think I would be able to afford it. She confirmed it was included in the cost of the visit which was unbelievableto me but I've never dealt with treatment/visits without insurance... even after I explained I was on the sliding scale because of being uninsured/unemployed. Today, I get an email saying I owe $256!!! Had I known I wouldn't have agreed to the labs!! I didn't go to my usual dermatologist because I couldn't afford the $225 I explained this too. In the end, the soonest I could see a dermatologist thru HB isn't until October for the vaccine I've been getting and the "back plan" an ointment they can't help proved that at an affordable price either quoted my the price thru GoodRX which anyone can get even with insurance. No one in their billing department is reachable, due to "technical issues" per the recording. What a scam operation this place is.
although HBH won't forward your balance to collections, the lab they use will! I was living away from the location where they were sending bills and the repercussions to my credit are still being felt 10 years later. I now try to avoid as much as possible.
I just had a great experience here 3/17/23! I went here for an initial consultation for surgery, and everyone I interacted with was so kind and accepting. They really listened to me and seem very invested in the idea that patients should have control over what happens with their bodies. It's been a very long time since I've been to a doctor and did not feel upset or scared, but I never felt that way at Howard Brown. I will definitely return here for future medical needs!
This system is extremely disorganized, from their layoffs to their failure to report vaccines. I received a vaccination from them in summer 2022 at a "pop-up" clinic they did in a bar, and my vaccination was never reported to the Illinois Department of Health. Somehow every other vaccine I've received has been reported, but HBH cannot figure out how to implement simple record management.
Can't reach anyone. It was still during office hours, and it said, press 2 to leave a message. And when i did, it said office is closed, please call back... What about PEP, etc., and an on call doctor...? NOT COOL.
The pharmacy employees are so diligent and always on top of every single medication that I have been prescribed. They always catch things that the doctor doesn't catch and saves the patient from unnecessary risks. They always make sure that the patient is well informed, notified and reminded. They have also always been willing to make accommodations based on my unique needs and circumstances. I am thoroughly impressed with them and it is always a pleasure going here to pick up my prescriptions.
I cannot say enough kind things about the wonderful staff of this facility. I started feeling faint after getting vaccinated and Rachele went out of her way to sit me down and get me a fan and ice packs as it was an 86 degree day outside and then called her manager, Nanette, to sit with me and get me water. Truly blown away by the attentive and kind care!
I love this place, very clean and professional even though it far away for me. But that no problem
