The "national library" is neither national nor a library. In my opinion this "institution" does NOT deserve to be called a library. Its clerks take forever to process books, and their criteria are narrow to the point of narrow-mindedness. They want items to be bound a certain way and to contain mainly text - or they reject them. This excludes a lot of material that reflects the realities of this country better than the commercial and state-funded trade stuff. This is narrow-minded, and philistine. Then the enormous processing time for those items the so-called library does accept - is so obscenely long as to make the items practically inaccessible. This so-called "national" so-called "library" was no doubt established in emulation of the Library of Congress. It simply isn't doing its job, at least if its job is to preserve the literature of the nation and make it accessible. Moreover if it excludes anything it should exclude all that trade stuff that's readily accessible anywhere else - and concentrate on the material that's at once so informative, and so vulnerable. So far it isn't doing any of this, or is doing the opposite. It isn't mainly preserving what most needs preservaton. It's the book-burning of the day. ___________________ An Important Update: The National Library will accept my books after all, as directed by their chief, Leslie Weir. I am grateful for this reconsideration for reflecting principles of inclusivity and the writing and publishing realities of the contemporary scene. I believe that this will help to establish a precedent good for the nation. That is certainly my wish. Praise to the National Library, their staff and their director, for reexamining their policies and adapting them to better fulfill their mission. However, until inclusiveness becomes less the exception and more the rule, this review remains negative.
Back there today. Has reopened after Covoid Staff friendly and extremely helpful. Helped get my Ottawa Street Directories for me off shelf and onto cart. Had surgery can't lift heavy things. Got home sore and stuff. 61 year old not used to working again. A few more days should be better. Thanks
The Ottawa library is a great place to find new and exciting books to read or books that help you on your personal journey through life. I found a great book that I can use to help me improve myself and become a better person! Only at the Ottawa library!
Apparently Canada Post doesn't have their address in their system so I can't send them my books via Canada Post. How bizarre ‍
I went to check out the exhibit for the Canada 150th. It was a nice set up with lots of information. They had a cool board game that I wish was still around today that helped kids learn french and English when they came to Canada. I thought that was really cool. There was an area that you could not take any photos and had to stay quiet. The security was nice and friendly. They let you know what was acceptable in that room and were kind about it all. They have a coat check and paid parking. Not a lot of people where there so it was nice to be able to walk around and enjoy it.
Found very easy to register and enter. The staff I dealt with were very helpful and there was plenty that I was interested in finding. Like all records , more digitization would be nice but if it were I would not have needed to come onsite to visit and wouldn't be rating the location. My advice would be , to be kind but ask for help when you needed. Some of the staff were very knowledgeable and happy to assist.
There is a beautiful sculpture of a boy and a girl sitting on the bench with quotes about reading
God help you if you want to speak to anyone who works there, or if you have a question. Unless you actually GO THERE.....you cannot get through their automated phone service. The robot answering machine gives you 8 Choices, but none offer to patch you through to an actual person, and the other choices, are just more automated services. Unfortunately, this is now typical for most businesses or groups who are more interested in saving a few $$'s than they are in providing a service.
Good place for a meeting
