15,000+ high quality donated books, CDs, DVDs and vinyl are available. Proceeds support additional services/programming at the library in Rockcliffe Park.
The Rockcliffe Park Spring Book Sale takes place every April and is held at the Rockcliffe Park Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (OPL) and Community Centre located at 380 Springfield Road, Ottawa. The 2016 event takes place on April 23 from 10 am to 5 pm and April 24 from 11 am to 5 pm.
Over 15,000 high quality donated books, CDs, DVDs and vinyl recordings are sold to members of the public and the book trade. Books are divided into approximately 30 separate categories. Genres include art, architecture, music and photography; children’s books; biographies; classics; cooking, crafts and gardening; fiction of all types; history, politics and military; philosophy, religion and spirituality; reference; science; health and self-help; sports, games, humour and more. Large collections of CDs, DVDs, and vinyl are also categorized.
Over the years, the Rockcliffe Park Spring Book Sale has established an excellent reputation. While many buyers originate from Rockcliffe Park, Lindenlea, Manor Park, New Edinburgh and Vanier, others come from across Metro Ottawa and as far away as Kingston and Cornwall.
Taking 10 months to plan, the sale is organized by the Rockcliffe Park Residents’ Association Library Committee and over 40 volunteers. Proceeds support additional services and programming at the public library in Rockcliffe Park as well as the OPL’s broader literacy programs.
The Rockcliffe Park Spring Book Sale was founded in the 1997 by Barbara Mirsky, the librarian in charge of the then newly built Rockcliffe Park Public Library. Some of its early volunteers include Sheila Nelles, Barbara Barker and Di Bethune who are still very active in the sale. Its current leader, Jane Dobell has been involved for over 10 years. She is the former Chair of the Ottawa Board of Education and longtime literacy champion in Ottawa.
The event is supported by a number of local businesses. The 2016 sponsors are
The Chartwell Rockcliffe Retirement Residence, Rockcliffe Landscaping, Brian Montgomery of Montgomery Asset Management RBC|Wealth Management Dominion Securities and Dymon Storage.
The Rockcliffe Park Spring Book Sale is a cash only event.
