LBDHHS is one of only three city-operated local health jurisdictions in California (Pasadena and Berkeley being the other two).
In 2006, the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) celebrated its 100th anniversary of providing public health services to Long Beach residents.
Today, our mission continues as we work endlessly to control the spread of communicable diseases, educate our communities about health behaviors, and provide immunizations and various other services to our population.
LBDHHS is comprised of five Bureaus: Community Health, Environmental Health, Housing Authority, Preventive Health, and Support Services.
Community Health provides health education, promotion, and family/youth services to the community in order to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles. (562) 570-4176
Environmental Health is responsible for protecting the public's health by preventing exposure to toxic substances, disease, unsanitary conditions and other environmental hazards through enforcement of municipal, state and federal laws. (562) 570-4145
Housing Authority administers the City's various rental assistance programs, which provide housing opportunities to low-income, elderly, and disabled families of Long Beach. (562) 570-6985
Preventive Health provides a variety of prevention, education, and clinical services including tuberculosis and sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing/treatment, HIV/AIDS care and coordination, family planning, immunizations, monitoring and reporting of communicable disease, birth and death registration, and field epidemiology services. This bureau also manages the Public Health Emergency Management Program, houses the City's public health laboratory, and coordinates programs that promote access to quality healthcare such as Medi-Cal Outreach, Healthy Families, and the Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Program.
