Welcome to the MAHEC Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship in Asheville, NC.
This Sports Medicine Fellowship year will ultimately shape what you do professionally for the remainder of your career. After the completion of this year you will be sought after for your skills and placed in high regard among your colleagues. You will have the skill set of a specialist while maintaining and furthering the primary care passion that got you to this point. Whether your future involves working in a primary care setting integrating sports and musculoskeletal care across your patient population, being an academician, becoming a team physician for a professional team, or working in an orthopaedic office as a non-operative orthopaedist, you will develop the comfort and tools to get you where you want to go.
The dual involvement of MAHEC (Mountain Area Health Education Center) and Mission Hospital/Mission Sports Medicine allows for a blending of visions to collaborate and provide outstanding care to patients and athletes across the 26 counties that comprise Western North Carolina. Our vision is to be a leader in primary care, sports medicine and musculoskeletal care while being advocates for our patients and educators to the community. As fellows you will have the opportunity to work in the academic and private sectors, gleaning information from a variety of primary care, orthopaedic, and healthcare professionals. You will work on every level of athletics covering professional sports with the Asheville Tourists Minor League Baseball club, high level Division I collegiate athletics with UNC-Asheville and Western Carolina University, Division II athletics with Mars Hill University, semi-professional exposure with Asheville Rugby Club, and high school sports with various local teams.
Founded in 1974, MAHEC is the largest member of the North Carolina AHEC system, one of the oldest and most extensive AHEC systems in the country. The NC AHEC Program evolved in an effort to address national and state concerns with the supply, distribution, retention and quality of health professionals.
