First time customer at Mel's. We ordered the Hungry Man special but substituted the pancakes for french toast. The owners were very polite and kind. They even have delivered my meal to my car. The portion was very good. The home fries were nicely cooked and crispy not soggy like other places.
My mother and I came here on mother's day because we wanted to try a new breakfast place and support local businesses but our experience here was AWFUL. When we arrived, we essentially had to seat ourselves at our table and the waitress took several minutes to give us our menus not entirely her fault since is was somewhat busy but we still should have received the menu when we sat down The utensils were dirty and when replaced, those were also dirty. We ended up having to wait over half an hour to receive our food which is ridiculous because my mom only ordered 3 eggs, that should have taken maximum 10-15 minutes. But it took closer to 40 minutes which didnt bother me too much but that is NOT OKAY because my mother is diabetic and NEEDS to eat something before a certain time in the day or she will faint. She was already feeling unwell due to how long we waited. The food ended up tasting mediocre. I ordered Mel's hungry man and the toast was good, the bacon was good, the eggs were okay, and the ham was also okay but the sausage didn't taste good. As for the pancake, it was very poorly cooked. It tasted raw in the middle and burnt on the outside. I had to mask the taste with maple syrup and butter. The restaurant is also quite dirty and we noticed immediately as we walked in. especially in the kitchen and the washroom, my mom was worried about this being a health hazard but we stayed anyways and tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. We also tipped the waitress because it is not totally her fault that the service was so poor. I was confused by how awful the experience was because of the good reviews this place had but honestly, the clientele here is questionable. The experience ruined mother's day for my mom and I feel awful for suggesting it.
First time eating at this restaurant, the food portion is good, the food is normal, coffee is off, too watery. Service was great. Just when we pay the bill, the front desk just punched in the amount himself, this guy put in $1.85 for each coffee but actually I ordered with combo, should’ve be $1 each. So I pointed out and he then changed. So I’m wondering what if people did not see the amount he put in, they will pay more for sure. Because there is no receipt giving out of what we ordered so people can’t check. Be Cautious of this part since I saw most ppl who eat here are older people.
Great place. Current owners of 21 years closing May 31st, 2022. Someone said they may reopen under new management. Cross your fingers and hope that the thing that happened at Famous Sam's doesn't happen here the new owners were not up to snuff.
We stopped in here on our way back to Barrie and had the BEST breakfast we've had in a long time! They kindy packaged it in a box for us as we were taking it with us. Juice too! Everything was perfect, cooked exactly as requested and there was plenty of food!! Could not have asked for a better meal, and the price was beyond reasonable. Thank you so much
Nice little out of the way diner. It was busy when I was there yesterday for lunch. Reasonably clean. Reasonably friendly. Reasonable prices. No reason not to go again. However no particular reason to actually go there again except for proximity. Absolutely nothing outstandingly special or endearing. However, not to upset the owners with any negativity I would have no problem eating there again .
Super friendly staff. Quick turnaround time. Everything was nicely packaged. Great value for the size of portions. A worthy local business to support. Thank you for the delicious breakfast!
Very good food, excellent and generous portions. It's a diner....don't expect Escargot and Filet Mignon....but if you're in the mood for a really good Clubhouse & Fries, then this is the best spot in town.
Mel's is a great place for a good meal. The food is consistent and if you pick the right meal, their value can't be beat. Breakfast is their forte but they have lunch meals and sandwiches. I almost always go for the Hungry Man. For under $10 and enough food for two it's hard to beat. 3 eggs anystyle 2 pancakes 4 Bacon, 2 Sausage AND 1 Ham Home fries 2 slices toast OJ or Apple Juice Tea or Coffee as much as you need to keep you awake Find me a better deal and I'll buy YOU breakfast!
It was by my suggestion that we go to this diner. Not again! My omelette was flat and dry. I ate 2/3 of it, thinking not to complain . When I opened it up, it had been totally overlooked on the one side. Then I made the complaint! Zero $$ discount from the cook. There are plenty of other breakfast places that care about their quality of food served.
